About The Role
We’re looking for a Structured Products Manager, West Trading to join our West Power Trading team on a Full-Time basis. In this role, you’ll report to the Manager of West Trading and work as a recognized subject matter expert and trusted advisor in Western Power Markets. In this senior role, you will draw on your deep market expertise and extensive industry networks to anticipate market trends, identify opportunities, and shape strategies that drive our long-term success.
As an functional lead in your field, you will be accountable for delivering results that impact the entire trading function. You will build, manage, and grow key customer relationships, develop innovative structured products and commercial solutions, and advise internal stakeholders on complex market issues and evolving regulatory landscapes.
You will operate with broad latitude in a fast-paced, complex environment, often tackling unique challenges that require conceptual thinking and creative problem-solving. This role plays a pivotal part in achieving our financial and strategic objectives, guiding the application of existing principles and contributing to new ideas that position TransAlta as a partner of choice in the Western markets.
This position is based out of our Downtown Calgary Head Office.

A DAY IN THE LIFE
- Serve as a subject matter expert and trusted advisor on structured power products, recognized both within TransAlta and across the industry.
- Anticipate and analyze internal and external business challenges, providing market insights and thought leadership that inform trading strategies and executive decisions.
- Lead the identification, development, negotiation, and execution of complex power purchase agreements and structured transactions (swaps, options, heat rate options, congestion, emissions products) across WECC, SPP, and ERCOT.
- Build, expand, and manage long-term customer relationships, acting as the primary Trading Originator and representative for Western Markets.
- Apply your expertise to design innovative commercial structures that create value, manage risk, and deliver on key financial metrics.
- Support the development and execution of a 1–3-year business plan, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy.
- Provide coaching and informal leadership to less experienced team members; may review or guide the work of junior professionals.
- Actively monitor and communicate market, competitor, industry, and regulatory trends, sharing intelligence with internal stakeholders.
- Represent TransAlta at industry events and within external networks, strengthening our reputation as an industry leader and partner of choice.
- Facilitate internal approvals for complex deals, ensuring robust risk management and alignment with strategic goals.
- An undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of education and significant relevant industry experience.
- A minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in West Power Origination and/or trading — with proven expertise developing structured products and solutions.
- A strong reputation as a market expert and trusted advisor with deep knowledge of Western Power Markets, competitors, and regulatory frameworks.
- A demonstrated ability to think conceptually, navigate ambiguity, and solve unique challenges that impact the broader business.
- Exceptional relationship management skills, with a track record of building strong networks and influencing key stakeholders.
- Advanced communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- A collaborative mindset, with the ability to informally mentor others and share knowledge across teams to achieve common goals
