Reporting to the Director of Animal Health, this is a professional position in Pathology and laboratory management of the provincial Animal Health Diagnostic and Food Safety Laboratory and the Foreign Animal Disease Laboratory. The Veterinary Pathologist will provide veterinary necropsy services and manage the Animal Health laboratory. The Veterinary pathologist directs the laboratory personnel in proper specimen processing techniques; management of the laboratory’s ISO accreditation program; examination of animal carcasses submitted for the purpose of disease diagnosis and or forensic analysis, including histopathological evaluation of tissues from these animals; the development of new disease or food quality testing within divisional laboratories; collaboration in research projects that advance the regulatory and extension goals of the department and collaborate with other FPT government agencies on disease surveillance and food safety activities. Represents the department on committees; prepares/reviews written materials including briefing notes, technical presentations, and proposals. Other related duties as required.
Screening Criteria
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent degree
- Completion of a 3-year residency in Anatomic Pathology
- Experience in mammalian diseases and pathology
- Experience with evaluation of the safety and quality of unpasteurized milk and meat
- Laboratory Management experience

Conditions of Offer
- Valid class 05 driver’s license
Conditions of Acceptance
- Eligible for full licensure with the Newfoundland and Labrador College of Veterinarians
- Board certification or by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP)
- Alternatively, board eligibility may be considered with appointment renewal contingent on ACVP or ECVP board certification within 3 years of the date of hire
