The Niagara Catholic District School Board invites applications for Casual Custodian. Casual Custodians assist in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of school buildings, Board facilities and grounds to support an excellent learning and working environment for students and staff.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:

  • Able to work in a busy environment independently as well as part of a team
  • Clean assigned areas per APPA Standards
  • Promote a clean and organized work environment
  • Carry out tasks that require all-day standing and repetitive movements including: bending, squatting, and lifting
  • Seasonal outdoor duties: removing snow and salting walkways, mowing grass, raking leaves, trimming hedges when required
  • Sweep and wash corridors, gymnasium, classrooms and other areas within school
  • Collect and dispose of garbage from school building and grounds
  • Wash windows when necessary
  • Dust and wipe desks and other furniture
  • Strip and wax floors, wash walls, windows and other surfaces. Also clean and shampoo carpets
  • Make minor repairs to the building, as well as the plumbing and electrical systems, and building using common hand tools. Inspect roof or building for leaks and damages
  • Inspect heating and ventilation system. Clean filters and oiling motors in addition to pumps and fan belts
  • Replace regular and fluorescent light bulbs as required
  • Record inspection results and energy consumption, and enter work requests and supply orders into the Facilities Services online system
  • Report any damages to school property directly to the school Principal as well as report needed major repairs promptly to the Manager of Facilities Services or designate
  • Inspect fire alarm, fire hoses, extinguishers (re-fill or replaces when low) and emergency lighting
  • Maintain an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel; also requisitions supplies when necessary
  • Inspect and bleed (when necessary) air compressor
  • Move or arrange furniture in auditorium (i.e. in preparation for examinations) and remove and replace damaged furniture
  • Move or carry boxes or other supplies for teachers
  • Assist students to open their lockers
  • Ensure that doors and windows are locked (if caretaker is last to leave school)
  • Open all doors in the morning, turn on lights, inspect portable classrooms for vandalism and ensure that heating/ventilation systems are working properly
  • Assist in emergency response when required
WHAT YOU BRING:
  • Successful completion of Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent
  • Previous cleaning experience, with knowledge of basic cleaning chemicals
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision
  • Flexibility and adaptability required
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
  • Reliable transportation to all sites within the Boards jurisdiction is required
  • Ability to organize daily tasks
  • Up to one year previous experience in floor care products and approved cleaning methods
  • Physical fitness and ability to perform the assigned duties (including climbing ladders and scaffolds)
  • Boiler system experience an asset
LOCATIONS:
  • Must be able to travel to all locations within the Niagara Catholic District School Board jurisdiction
HOURS:
  • Various morning, afternoon and evening shifts: as needed on a casual on call basis. Must be available Monday to Friday for Elementary and Secondary School hours
RATE OF PAY: $23.01 per hour
