Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

• Conduct mechanical and component testing programs on metallic and non-metallic components using computer-controlled servo-hydraulic test machines, autoclaves or other equipment in accordance with established procedures.
• Connect data acquisition and monitoring instrumentation to test specimens.
• Perform metallurgical examinations of samples in the laboratory.
• Perform forensic investigations of metallic and non-metallic materials/components, power distribution equipment, cables, and electromechanical equipment.
• Assist in the development of test methods, procedures, techniques and lab equipment.
• Analyse experimental data to assist professional staff in preparing technical reports.
• Interact with supervisory and support staff to ensure that work is completed on schedule and to the required quality standards.
• Maintain records of experimental work as per quality assurance requirements.
• Ensure that laboratory equipment is properly calibrated and maintained and help to maintain a safe, well-organized work environment.
• Interact with customers and perform off-site work at utility customer sites.
• Work may be conducted in conventional laboratories and/or Zone 3 radioactive materials laboratories.
  
  

What You Need To Succeed

• Good working knowledge of mechanical testing, instrumentation and control, from equipment set-up, safe operation and monitoring, and troubleshooting.
• Good working knowledge of hydraulic systems (including load frames), including setup, I&C, safe operation and monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
• Demonstrated computer skills for data acquisition and analysis.
• Demonstrated good verbal and written communication skills to deal effectively with colleagues and customers. Some minor technical report preparation may be required such as development of laboratory and testing procedures, reporting of testing results, etc.
• Demonstrated strong interpersonal and organizational skills to receive and provide information to customers.
• Experience with electrical testing (e.g. on power distribution equipment and cables) is an asset.
• Knowledge of the mechanics of materials is an asset.
• Knowledge of metallographic preparation of metals is an asset.
• Experience with chemical handling (WHMIS) is considered an asset.
• Ability to perform work at client sites (e.g. nuclear utilities) is required.
• Ability to carry out and document test programs in accordance with established procedures.
• Basic knowledge and experience in the preparation of drawings using CAD software.
• A period of up to 7 years’ experience is considered desirable.
• Successful completion of grade 12 in a secondary, commercial or technical school or equivalent plus 3 year concentrated study in an Engineering Technology/Technician Program (e.g. mechanical, electrical, metallurgical, welding concentration) at a College of Applied Arts and Technology, Polytechnical Institute or Community College.
