NAIT Protective Services is recruiting for two full-time, permanent Level 1 Peace Officers.

Reporting to a Peace Officer Sergeant, NAIT Community Peace Officers (CPO) are responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for staff, students, visitors and Institute property. NAIT CPOs follow the Community Policing Model by means of building and supporting partnerships through crime prevention education and innovative problem-solving initiatives. On a 24/7 basis, the CPOs address the safety and security needs of the NAIT community by providing general information services, effective physical security, personal safety services, investigational support and property management support. The CPOs play an important liaison role in campus emergency incident response while working with emergency services personnel from partner agencies. As appointed “community peace officers”, NAIT’s CPOs have the discretionary authority to enforce certain regulations, bylaws and statutes found within both municipal and provincial legislation. In addition to providing a high level of customer service that follows accountable standards and best practices, all members of NAIT Protective Services take pride in representing a value system based on honesty, integrity, professionalism and mutual respect.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a safe environment for students, staff and visitors to campus

  • Ensure compliance of applicable municipal, provincial and federal statutes, as well as NAIT policy

  • Conduct regular patrols of the campus using a variety of methods including foot, bicycle and vehicle patrols

  • Respond to calls for service and resolve conflict using sound judgement

  • Prepare reports, collect evidence and attend court as required

  • Build and maintain relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, in keeping with the principles of Community Policing

  • Effect arrests on subjects using appropriate levels of force

  • Coordinate with other first responders, such as Police, Fire and EMS services to resolve emergency situation



Assets:

The following certifications would be considered an asset

  • Experience as a Level 1 Peace Officer with appointment authorities related to the Traffic Safety Act, Trespass to Premises Act, Gaming Liquor and Cannabis Act.

  • Completion of a recognized post-secondary education program in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field or equivalent prior experience in a Peace Officer Level 1 position (or equivalent) in lieu of education

  • Experience working in a post-secondary environment or other diverse customer service focused organization

  • Experience using Resolver Incident Management Solutions or equivalent incident reporting databases

  • Law Enforcement Bike Association (LEBA) Level A or B Training Certification

  • Verbal Judo or Tactical Communications Certification

  • Defensive Driving Training

  • WHMIS Training


Qualifications:

  • Completion of grade 12

  • Possession of a Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License (or provincial equivalent). Maintaining a driver’s license is a requirement for this position. Applicants will be required to provide a drivers abstract suitable to NAIT Protective Services. A Class 5 GDL license will not be accepted

  • Minimum three years of strong customer service experience and one year of related, diverse law enforcement experience is required

  • Possession of the Provincial Community Peace Officer I designation

  • Must be sworn as a municipal bylaw officer

  • Satisfactory medical and vision evaluations

  • Be physically fit and able to pass the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (P.A.R.E.) with a minimum passing score at or under four minutes and forty-five seconds (4:45) or other approved physical evaluation. (Evaluation testing will be undertaken at the assessment stage paid for by the applicant)

  • Employment is dependent upon an enhanced Police Information Check, including a Vulnerable Sector check, that are satisfactory to NAIT Protective Services and the Alberta Solicitor General

  • Possession of a valid first aid and basic CPR certificates and AED qualified

  • Equivalencies may be considered



Uniforms: Will be provided by the employer at no cost to the employee

Location: The successful candidates will be based at NAIT’s Main Campus - 11762 106 St, Edmonton, AB T5G 2R1

Hours of work: NPS is a 24/7 operation, and employees are expected to be available for a variety of shifts including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.


Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).

Remuneration: $61,451.26 - $79,574.82 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package. (Classification – Peace Officer Level 1).

This position is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
