Summary Of Duties

The Medical Laboratory Assistant plays an integral role in the laboratory by providing support services to ensure quality patient care. This includes the following:

  • Specimen handling -receiving, sorting, centrifuging, aliquoting, labelling and distributing specimens to work stations,
  • Updating patient information, filing and retrieving records, verifying and registering patient demographics, answering phone calls
  • Performing routine technical procedures
  • Providing customer service assistance to address issues with patients, referring offices and internal departments
  • Facilitating procurement of miscellaneous specimens
  • Arranges for the transport of the specimens to the laboratory
  • Maintains required inventory and forms, maintains work areas
  • Practices in a safe manner, maintains a safe working environment and complies with IP&C policies
  • Collects and documents workload statistics and files safety reports as required
  • Collects and organizes documents as required
  • Follows departmental procedures
  • Participates in CQI initiatives and assists in training of staff
  • Participates in On-call duties
  • Performs other duties as required

Qualifications/Skills

  • Successful completion of Community College program for Medical Laboratory Assistant
  • (MLPAO (previously known as OSMT) certification required
  • CSMLS MLA certification an asset
  • TDG certification
  • Knowledge of privacy regulations related to confidential information
  • Proficient computer skills required including MS OFFICE-EXCEL, Word
  • Knowledge of registration of microbiology samples preferred
  • Lab automation experience preferred
  • Knowledge of specimen and diagnostic terminology with accurate spelling
  • Experience handling all specimen types demonstrating good laboratory practice
  • Previous experience with Sunquest Laboratory Information System and electronic Positive Patient Identification (ePPID) such as Sunquest Collection Manager preferred
  • Demonstrated exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to understand and apply information to new situations.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize effectively in a fast paced environment and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member and adjust to varying work assignments as needed, or work independently, as required
  • Demonstrated satisfactory work performance, punctuality and attendance records
