Job Summary

The Chief Mechanic is responsible for the safe operation, maintenance and repair of all machinery and electrical equipment on board. The role supervises all Engineer Officers and monitors overtime. Furthermore, the role is accountable for setting and maintaining the department's operating budget, adhering to the purchasing procedures, and always protecting the interests of the owners and the company.

Main Responsibilities

  • Oversee the Engine Room department and ensure the safety of the crew
  • Implement company policies and procedures concerning the department as described in the Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Ensure that the Engine Room department personnel receive formal shipboard training through the designated Officer on board
  • Handle discipline on board and the evaluation of all Engine department personnel
  • Oversee the safe and efficient operation of the ship's machinery and technical installations
  • Monitor the performance of propulsion plant and auxiliary machinery
  • Keep an accurate record of all machinery parameters by Supervisors and Mechanics on duty in the engine room logbook
  • Monitor and control the ship's fuel and lubricant consumption and the condition of fuel, bunkers, and lubricating oil quantities
  • Ensure compliance with statutory and classification survey requirements for machinery and assigned spaces
  • Ensure the reporting of any accidents or damage to the ship's machinery or technical installations
  • Assess and mitigate all risks identified on board in collaboration with other members of the ship's management team
  • Ensure that the filing system, records, and technical drawings are accurate and well maintained by designated officers
  • Support the captain in all aspects of vessel operation and act as the company's technical representative when dealing with third parties

Working Conditions

The role is performed on a vessel in difficult environmental conditions including being outside in various weather conditions and in small spaces. The role requires extensive travel (100%) within Canadian waterways.

Requirements

Requirements Experience

Vessel or Ship

  • Between 3 to 5 years of experience working on a vessel or ship

Education/Certification/Designation

  • Valid Transport Canada medical certificate
  • Valid certification from the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW)
