Purpose
Sault Area Hospital is currently recruiting for a full-time Life Skills Trainer to join their team in the Mental Health and Addictions Program. The successful candidate will support the Transitional Care – Ventures (TC-V), including the Northway Wellness Centre location. The Transitional Care Outpatient program assists adults living with mental illness and addictions in achieving their recovery goals by promoting autonomy and equipping them with necessary self-management skills. The Life Skills Trainer will provide a supportive and structured work environment, fostering skill development, and facilitating positive social interaction.

Duties
- Developing, coordinating, and facilitating programming including vocational skills, self-management, food preparation, financial literacy, communication, social interaction and other activities of daily living to support transitional employment clients in the safe provision of food to clients, staff, and visitors, and ‘tuck’ shop offerings.
- Provide programming and services to utilizing recovery oriented and strengths-based approaches.
- Responsible for helping clients learn day to day living experiences that can be adapted and applied to their own lives.
- Ensures that client’s physical, emotional, social, educational, medical needs are being met and directly assists to enhance quality of life and personal life goals while receiving services within the Transitional Care Program.
- Coordinating and monitoring day-to-day functioning of TC-V, including hiring staff, maintaining and ordering supplies, safety issues, problem solving, scheduling, interventions as needed, payroll and distribution of pay.
- Developing, coordinating, and facilitating programming around vocational skills, self-management, cooking, healthy eating, financial literacy, communication, social interaction and other activities of daily living.
- Assist clients to develop attainable short and long-term goals for skill development, strategies for meeting goals and action plan for implementation.
- Participating in the development/facilitation of skill-building groups for clients.
- Functioning as a professional role model demonstrating good interpersonal skills and a commitment to self-growth and development.
- Maintaining current knowledge of best practices and benchmarks for the delivery of services, appropriate research, literature, accreditation requirements, policy and legislative requirements and implementing improvements/changes as appropriate.
- Complying with organizational policies, procedures and standards.
- Balancing and closing cash register transactions at end of shift, securing valuables for safekeeping, ensuring TC-V is closed and securely locked.
- Ensuring all prices and quantities are accurate and issuing receipts, refunds, credit and/or change due.
- Ordering and ensuring inventory levels are stocked
- Assisting the management team in maximizing sales and profits by meeting sales goals and budget requirements while minimizing loss and supporting all store profitability processes.
- Assuming other duties as may be assigned.
- College Diploma in a relative field of study preferably in behavior sciences, social service work, community social services or the equivalent.
- Certification in Safe Food Handling
- Valid Ontario driver’s license
- Knowledge of kitchen and food preparation safety
- Ability to Prepare and cook food according to recipes, quality standards
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Act
- Knowledge of Suicide Intervention
- Knowledge specific to position, such as;
- Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Job Coaching and support duties
- Ontario Disabilities Support Program
- Ontario Works
- Community Resources
- Principles and practice of psychosocial rehabilitation
- Psycho-education and Recovery
- Knowledge of evidence based treatment modalities and services.
- Working knowledge of basic accounting principles
- Experience in a multidisciplinary team.
- Writing skills including the ability to synthesize information into clear, concise messages both for detailed analytical reports and executive summaries.
- Verbal communication including the ability to relate well with others and ability to adapt style as needed.
- Organizational and prioritization skills and ability.
- Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Windows.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; ability to meet and interact with people in a pleasant, professional, responsible and reassuring manner, both in person and on the telephone; tact, courtesy and alertness in public contacts.
- Demonstrated behaviour consistent with the hospital’s mission statement and core values.
