Job Description
The purpose of the Manager, Mine Planning role is to provide technical leadership in Mineral Reserves evaluations both in study/project and operational phases. The role encompasses all aspects of mine design and planning including geology, drill, blast, ground support, mobile and fixed equipment selection, cost estimations (capital and operating costs) and assessment of risks and opportunities. In addition, the Manager, Mine Planning is expected to contribute to the development and implementation of Underground LOM plan guidelines and best practices for Mine Planning and Mineral Reserves evaluations.
Job Responsibilities
- Undertake and/or provide inputs to the LOM plans for studies/projects and operations to ensure a realistic range of options are evaluated, the plans are achievable, and can meet corporate’s objectives.
- Ensure the technical integrity and quality of all technical work associated with Mineral Reserves evaluation in accordance to applicable regulations.
- Execute or provide direct supervision to both internal staffs and external consultants to complete mine planning aspects for Scoping, Prefeasibility and Feasibility studies.
- Prepare business cases, reports and summary information regarding projects, potential acquisitions / divestments and other initiatives and communicate the results to senior management key stakeholders.
- Identify the need for and develops company-wide standards, procedures, and policies and ensure corporate’s mine planning requirement are supported by fit for purpose tools, skills and processes.
- Identify, implement and monitor technical and planning improvements which includes the adoption of mine planning applications, technology and digitalization to meet corporate sustainability and future mining requirement.
- Act as a change agent for areas related to mine engineering/planning. Assist site/project teams to implement improvement opportunities and mitigate risks and support change management processes in implementation of new technologies.
- Foresee and removes barriers to project success and escalates major issues to project sponsors as necessary.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and influences others to achieve project goals.
Education and Experience
- Mine Engineering degree with P.Eng designation
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive responsibilities in an underground hard rock mining environment, in operations, engineering and/or project evaluation
- Strong technical knowledge and mining background in planning
Skills
- Good understanding of NI 43-101, JORC and SK 1300 technical reports.
- A firm understanding of underground and/or open pit mining procedures.
- Experience with strategic planning and budgeting in the mining industry.
- Strong proficiency in spreadsheet based cash flow analysis.
- Understanding of the various components required to make a mine a successful operation (mining, processing, tailings, and infrastructure).
- High degree of commercial acumen with previous experience in developing budgets to meet production and service targets. Ability to implement and communicate plans to ensure plans and targets are met.
- Experience in mine equipment selection, capital cost and operating cost estimates.
- Knowledge of integrated operations planning and scheduling best practices and systems.
- Establish trusting relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated interest in professional development.
- High level of proficiency with various mine planning software systems (such as HxGN MinePlan Schedule Optimizer, Vulcan, Datamine, Whittle, Net Present Value Scheduler, MineMax, Deswik, MSO, etc.) desirable. Exhibits an interest /aptitude for learning these systems.
- Well-developed technical report writing and presentation skills.
- Very strong communications skills. Team player with a strong inclination towards developing cooperative solutions. Ability to communicate effectively with Technical Services personnel and Senior Management.
- Ability to perform financial analysis in a mining environment. Level of proficiency in spreadsheet-based cash flow analysis. Xeras capabilities are a benefit.
- Ability to “cut to the chase”, quickly identifying key technical and business issues. Able to develop and present this information tailored to either a technical or management audience. Must be self-directed and work well in a highly unstructured environment.
- Ability to travel internationally (approximately 30% of the time).
