We are seeking a detail-oriented, highly organized, and proactive Mechanical Planner to join our railway mechanical team. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, scheduling, and coordinating mechanical maintenance activities across the railway fleet and infrastructure, with a strong focus on maximizing reliability, minimizing downtime, and ensuring compliance with safety and maintenance standards.
This role is critical to ensuring the reliability and availability of rolling stock and mechanical systems, supporting operational performance, and enabling predictive and preventative maintenance strategies.

We are seeking a detail-oriented, highly organized, and proactive Mechanical Planner to join our railway mechanical team. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, scheduling, and coordinating mechanical maintenance activities across the railway fleet and infrastructure, with a strong focus on maximizing reliability, minimizing downtime, and ensuring compliance with safety and maintenance standards.
This role is critical to ensuring the reliability and availability of rolling stock and mechanical systems, supporting operational performance, and enabling predictive and preventative maintenance strategies.
Key Areas Of Accountabilities
- Develop and maintain comprehensive preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance schedules for railway mechanical assets (e.g., locomotives, passenger railcars, generator railcars, track equipment).
- Collaborate with Maintenance Supervisors and Technicians to prioritize tasks and optimize equipment availability and reliability.
- Track and analyse equipment performance and failure trends, supporting root cause analysis and reliability improvement initiatives.
- Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to prioritize work orders based on reliability data, equipment criticality, and safety requirements.
- Review maintenance history and failure data to identify patterns and reliability risks, supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure that all work is planned with appropriate labor, materials, tools, and documentation, aligned with OEM guidelines and industry standards.
- Monitor work order progress, backlog, and resource utilization to drive efficiency and on-time completion.
- Integrate RCM, and condition monitoring insights into maintenance plans.
- Coordinate with supply chain and inventory teams to ensure availability of spare parts and materials for planned tasks.
- Update and maintain the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to reflect accurate asset information, work order tracking, and maintenance records.
- Support audits, inspections, and regulatory compliance related to mechanical maintenance.
Education/Certifications/Knowledge
- Red Seal certification in a related technical trade or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Maintenance, or a related field would be considered an asset
- Certification in maintenance planning/scheduling, reliability, and project management (e.g., CMRP, CRE, PMP) is a plus.
- Experience in maintenance planning/scheduling, preferably in the railway, transportation, or heavy industrial sector.
- Experience with railway-specific mechanical and electrical systems (e.g., braking systems, undercar truck assemblies, onboard generators, HVAC, etc.).
- Familiarity with reliability-centered maintenance (RCM) and root cause failure analysis (RCFA).
- Strong knowledge of maintenance best practices, reliability principles, and planning techniques.
- Proficiency in CMMS systems (e.g., Guide Ti, SAP PM, Maximo).
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to interpret technical drawings, manuals, and maintenance standards.
- Excellent communication and coordination skills.
- The base salary offered for this role is $100,000 to $115,000 per annum and can vary based on job-related expertise, qualifications, experience and internal equity.
