Environmental Engineer or Technician/Technologist, Solid Waste

Burnside is currently seeking a motivated professional to join our Solid Waste Management team in Pickering. You’ll be part of a collaborative group working to deliver thoughtful, practical, and forward-thinking solutions to clients across Ontario.

What You’ll Be Doing

In this role, you’ll contribute to the planning, design, and monitoring of waste management systems, including support for long-term master plans, Environmental Assessments, and strategies for diversion and disposal. Much of the work involves data analysis, calculations, and detailed documentation—so strong math and analytical skills are a must. You’ll see projects through from the concept phase to implementation, knowing your contributions help communities operate more sustainably.

Key Responsibilities Include

• Preparing technical proposals, assessments, design plans, tender packages, and project reports
• Supporting regulatory communications and applications
• Conducting site monitoring and providing training on waste operations
• Engaging in solid waste planning, permitting, and facility implementation
• Collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders to meet project goals
  
  

What You Bring To The Role

• A degree or diploma in Civil or Environmental Engineering or Technology
• Excellent math, analytical, and critical thinking skills—you’re comfortable working with data, spreadsheets, and detailed calculations
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 (especially Excel)
• Strong time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple tasks or projects
• Clear and professional communication—both written and verbal
• Ability to travel occasionally to client sites or other Burnside offices
  
  

It’s a Bonus If You Have

• Experience in solid waste management or with a consulting engineering firm
• Knowledge of composting, recycling, or waste processing technologies
• Familiarity with AutoCAD Civil 3D
• Understanding of environmental legislation and contaminant hydrogeology
