We are currently hiring a Junior Mechanical Designer to join our team in Ottawa. This is a great role for someone looking to further their education and training in Mechanical Design & Drafting.
Your primary responsibilities would include:
- Provides mechanical design, drafting and/or technical support to project groups for new and existing equipment (fixtures, cables, products, etc.) utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools.
- Able to create 3D parts or assemblies ranging in complexity, based on verbal, hand sketched, design layout instructions, production methods and processes, and produce detailed drawings in accordance with accepted industry and Company standards.
- Works with the Manufacturing Engineer (ME) to assist in designing assembly tooling, jigs and fixtures.
- Industry and Company standards related to Mechanical Design for the production of high quality drawings
- Tolerancing (linear) and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Standard industry symbols and drawing conventions
- Creation of Bill Of Materials (BOM) and parts lists using company standard tools
- GDC Engineering Processes and their application during the appropriate phases of the product development life cycle
- Configuration/Change Management principles and their application using the PDC workflow tool and process
- Product Life Cycle Development Processes describing key milestones and product development checkpoints for each of the life cycle phases; support to work product reviews/ walkthroughs (IDR, PDR, CDR, etc.) process for design validation throughout the planning, development and maintenance stages of a product development cycle.
- Understanding of basic Project Management principles and performance measurements and their application and value on specific projects. Assists the Team Lead in estimating project tasks and reporting progress
- Reviews the work of peers (primarily Designer 1) for drawing requirements, dimensional accuracy, fabrication standards, producability, and MCAD data base integrity (correct file naming convention and saved in the correct location).
- Perform other related duties as required.
- Requires a three year College Diploma as a Mechanical Engineering Technologist or equivalent.
- Strong organization & planning skills to complete assignments within schedule; conduct research and present technical and non-technical ideas.
- Demonstrates good co-ordination & investigative skills requiring interaction with internal customers and external vendors to integrate assigned tasks with other Designers thereby ensuring completeness and adherence to Company and/or Military Standards, specifications, procedures, and configuration control practices.
- Ability to develop highly effective working relationship with the Team Lead/Manager, fellow designers, project personnel, IPT members, internal customers and vendors, presenting different ideas, points of view and solutions to problems.
- Sits extensively in work station, periodically getting up to go to meetings, see internal customers, etc. Continuous hand/finger movement for mousing. Must be able to assemble/disassemble equipment and lift test equipment into and onto test apparatus.
- Considerable visual attention and concentration for longer periods of time, requiring continuous attention to finite detail.
