Position Summary
Registered Practical Nurse, Adult Mental Health (Day Hospital) Your goal in this position is to deliver patient/family driven care in collaboration with the inter-professional team in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment. You will be part of the Day Hospital and will be required to provide depot injections for referred patients, provide individual and group counselling, conduct documentation of all clinical activities. You may be asked to assist with recovery of ECT patients upon return from treatment to the Adult Mental Health Day Hospital. You will support patients on antipsychotic medications and educate them on how to recognize and manage physical and psychological effects of the medication. You will also run groups and may be asked to provide coverage as needed in the Wellness/Injection clinic and perform other duties as requested by manager. You will be required to provide assessments, education, prevention, maintenance and restoration of health in a supportive and culturally sensitive manner. You’re a great relationship builder, and foster close contacts with peers across the entire organization. You have great interpersonal skills, and effortlessly connect with physicians, staff, patients, and families. This position supports the hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for patients, staff, physicians, volunteers and families. On a practical level, you will
- Demonstrate the ability to function to the full scope of a Registered Practical Nurse as per the College of Nurse of Ontario
- Communicate effectively (written and verbal) with patients/clients, families and other members of the health care team.
- Think critically, set priorities and organize work in response to client/patient needs
- Be committed to ongoing learning, professional development, and continuous quality improvement.
- Have proficient skill level with computers, MS Word, Internet searches, data entry and patient information systems
- Have effective organizational, problem-solving, prioritization, time-management and teaching skills
- Have excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to foster good public relations and working relationships in a family centered care environment;
- Demonstrate your ability to perform appropriately in emergency situations
- Diploma in Practical Nursing
- Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
- Certificate in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT); Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), preferred
- Minimum 2 years psychiatric group experience, preferred
- Clinical competencies to manage patients with a variety of mental health and complex medical conditions
- Expertise in counselling and group skills
