About the Position


SLSC's Arena staff support the successful operations of our Arena ice surfaces and events, at one of the four ice surfaces at SLSC and/or Cochrane Arena. Arena Staff are responsible for maintaining our ice surfaces, housekeeping of dressing rooms, general upkeep of the arena facilities, with a strong focus on customer service and safety. These position is always working towards excellent in internal and external customer experience.

  • Arena Attendants - will focus on housekeeping and assisting with ice maintenance, while learning the skills needed to become Ice Techs.
  • Ice Techs - responsible for the safe operation of the Olympia ice refurfacers and ensuring high quality ice standards, among other duties.


Job Type: Part-Time, Hourly
- Full time hours may be available for Ice Tech candidates with full availability

Availability Required:

  • Evenings and Weekends are required
  • Evening shifts typically end at 12:00midnight; candidates must be available to work this late.


Specific responsibilities:

Arena Attendants:

  • Responsible for the cleanliness of arena facilities, ice quality, ice operations, & routine maintenance.
  • Responsible for the timely cleaning, set-up and take down, and routine maintenance of the arenas spaces.
  • Responsible for housekeeping of front-end public spaces including washrooms, dressing rooms, stands, hallways grounds and common spaces. This includes heavy cleaning of all spaces.
  • Assist Ice Techs in ice maintenance activities, supporting timely and efficient ice flood.
  • Work towards Ice Tech competencies, including Olympia driver training.

Ice Technicians:
  • Ensures a high quality of upkeep standards for exceptional customer experience in ice quality and the general upkeep of the arenas facilities.
  • Daily ice maintenance (resurface, scrap, edge). Responsible for timely and efficient ice floods.
  • Responsible for the safe operation of the Olympia machine (ice resurfacer)
  • Monitor the refrigeration plan and take mechanical readings to ensure correct parameters
  • Check ice-making equipment, machinery, supplies and general upkeep of the arena facilities.

All Arena Staff:
  • Check the condition of the boards, ice thickness, glass, netting and areas in the arena during maintenance times
  • Conduct repairs or preventative maintenance as required.
  • Monitor arenas to ensure rental clients adhere to the scheduled ice time and are acting appropriately within the arenas and dressing rooms.
  • Provide quality customer service to a wide variety of arena users by responding to concerns and questions.
  • Perform housekeeping duties throughout the arenas, including checking and cleaning dressing rooms between all rentals and events.
  • Works towards improving operations, decrease arena down time, streamline work processes and work collaboratively with Bookings, Programs, and other departments.
  • Demonstrate a safe work practice at all times by adhering to all SLSC safety policy and procedures and ensuring one’s own safety is preserved along with the safety of co-workers and SLSC guests.
  • Responsible for responding and acting as an SLSC Area Warden and/or First Aider as needed during facility emergencies, following established protocols.
  • Responsible for effective communication to Arenas leadership, Operations, Health & Safety, and others for follow-up on issues related to customer experience, hazards/safety risks, and reporting of incidents and other issues at the facility.



Qualifications:

  • Must be 18+
  • Must have evening and weekend availability (including for shifts until 12midnight).
  • Experience working in arenas, facility maintenance, or a similar work environment is an asset
  • Arenas Level 1 and 2 certificates are an asset
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers’ license and a sufficiently clear Driver’s Abstract
  • WHMIS certification (or willing to obtain)
  • First Aid & CPR certification (or willing to obtain)
  • Able to provide a clear Criminal Record Check
  • Physically fit and able to lift and move objects 50 lbs or greater
  • Must be able to work on slippery surfaces and in cold conditions.
