About the Position

This key position will drive the coordination and execution of aquatic programming, including: program and staff scheduling, staff management and training, and continually evaluating the quality and variety of aquatic programming. The Aquatic Supervisor(s) will provide assistance to the Aquatic Manager with financial planning of the aquatic budget, future programming development, and the coordination of special events. This position oversees the safe and consistent daily operation of the aquatic centre, recreation swimming, and programming, working closely and collaboratively with other departments such as Guest Services, Programs, Fitness, Health & Safety, Operations, and Marketing.

Required Availability: All Aquatic leadership positions work together to support a rotational schedule which provides optimal coverage and team support (including days, evenings, and weekends). Flexible availability is required.
Specific responsibilities:
  • Oversee the daily operations of the Aquatic Centre, ensuring a safe, efficient, and customer-service-oriented environment that aligns with the values and strategic goals of SLSC.
  • Manage Aquatic Programming and associated staff and schedules, including swim lessons, advanced courses, and external courses. Includes a heavy element of CRM administration, advance planning, and coordination with Marketing.
  • Together with the other members of the Aquatic Leadership Team, lead the recruitment, training, and ongoing development of aquatic staff, including Lifeguards, Swim Instructors, and Advanced Instructors.
    • Manage hiring, onboarding, performance coaching, and offboarding processes in accordance with HR policies.
    • Encourage professional growth through mentorship, development opportunities, and succession planning.
    • Provide oversight of staff scheduling with a focus on safety, service quality, and operational efficiency.
    • Anticipate and plan long-term for staffing needs during peak periods, holidays, special events, and advanced courses or programs.
    • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide consistent coaching and feedback.
    • Collaborate with the Aquatic Manager on cross-functional staffing coordination.
  • Manage the planning, delivery, and evaluation of aquatic programs and special events in alignment with SLSC values and business objectives, for a wide demographic, including children, youth, adults, and seniors.
  • Assist in the administration of operations and programming in line with industry best practices, safety standards, and SLSC policies.
  • Track and report expenses related to training equipment, public education materials, and aquatic supplies.
  • Collaborate with the Aquatic Manager on budget development and ongoing financial tracking.
  • Implement and uphold policies and procedures related to safety, lifeguarding, instruction, equipment use, and overall aquatic operations, in alignment with OHS, AHS, Alberta regulations, and Lifesaving Society (LSS) standards.
  • Teach leadership courses and re-certifications, as required.
  • Provide on-deck support, assist with challenging lesson situations, and respond to incidents or customer issues as needed.
  • Supervise and assist aquatic staff with the development, delivery, and execution of aquatic programs and special events for children, adults, youth and seniors

Qualifications:


The ideal candidate for this position will have recent experience in a similar role (administering and supervising aquatic programming), experience managing staff members, and will have current relevant certifications including NL, LSI, as well as advanced/trainer certs, in order to advance SLSC’s program offerings.


  • 3 - 5 years’ related leadership experience in an aquatic environment (including staff supervisory duties, and teaching swim lessons and advanced leadership courses)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Post-Secondary education in a related or applicable field considered an asset
  • Intermediate First Aid & CPR-C
  • Preference may be given to applicants with the following certifications:
    • Lifesaving Society Instructor
    • National Lifeguard
    • First Aid Instructor
    • Pool Operations
    • Lifesaving Society Trainer
  • Additional certifications are considered an asset – AFLCA Aquatic Specialty, Lifesaving Society Sport Coach, Lifesaving Society Community Official, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of Alberta Public Health Act Public Swimming Pools Regulation, Alberta Health Public Health & Compliance Pool Standards, Lifesaving Society Alberta Public Pool Safety Standards, and Aquatic Industry best practices
  • Confident computer skills, including experience with the MS Office 360 suite, and CRM software (such as "ActiveNet")
  • Successful Vulnerable Sector Check
  • Required availability which supports optimal team coverage, including evenings and weekends.

Physical Demands and Work Conditions:
  • Physical strength, stamina and coordination is required to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Noisy, hot, humid pool environment.
  • Exposure to mild chemicals from the pool.
