What To Expect
Tesla Toronto Automation is seeking a Manager, Controls Engineering to be part of a world-class team of engineers that are responsible for designing and building the automation equipment supplied to Tesla factories.

As a Manager, Controls Engineering, you are responsible for leading a team of automation engineers that build equipment controls solutions for Energy, Vehicle and Cell Manufacturing projects. This includes design, architecture and implementation of automated equipment such as high-speed cell assembly, electrolyte filling, and other equipment. The Manager will ensure that projects are following Tesla specifications as well as industry codes and standards, in addition to managing multiple projects and ensuring that projects stay on track according to the project timeline.

The key objective of the Controls Engineering team is developing new and innovative solutions in the factory and help Tesla achieve its ambitious manufacturing goals. All these automated manufacturing processes will be planned, assembled and tested at our Tesla facilities.

What You'll Do

  • Manage and grow a high performing, diverse team of Electrical, Vision, Data and Controls Engineers
  • Support the hiring and selection process of Electrical, Vision, Data and Controls Engineers
  • Handle day-to-day management tasks such as performance reviews, time off, HR Coordination and resource capacity
  • Architect, develop, and debug structure text and/or ladder logic code on multiple PLC controller platforms (Beckhoff TwinCAT and Siemens TIA Portal) with an emphasis on generating code that is organized, structured, documented, maintainable & reusable with error handling & recovery. PLC code will interact with subsystems such as conveyors, welding, various testers, Manufacturing Execution System (MES), LabView, machine vision & other third- party equipment.
  • Train and review team members controls architecture, mechanical automation equipment, design of electromechanical systems, PLCs code, motion controls, HMI design, SCADA design and 3D vision systems
  • Design and implement control reliable safety systems for safeguarding robots, gantries, conveyors, and other high-volume manufacturing equipment as per codes and standards
  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and carefully balance product specifications, process requirements, layout complexity, cost, and lead-time limits
  • Participate in Tesla controls specification and standard creation, release to Vendor and quote technical evaluation
  • Enforce application of Tesla controls standards, manage suppliers during specification, design review and design approval
  • Establish test plans and control test plan execution


  • What You'll Bring

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in automation industry with 3-5 years’ experience in a lead or supervisory role working on large scale automation projects
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent in Controls and Computer Control Systems, Mechatronic Engineering, Automation Engineering, etc. or equivalent experience
  • Experience in PLC programming following IEC 61131 standard, experience using PLC and HMI development tools such as Siemens TIA Portal, Beckhoff TwinCat 3, and Ignition
  • Familiar with different types of machine interfaces and industry standard communications and protocols, including ProfiNet, EtherCat and EtherNet/IP
  • In-depth knowledge of Electrical Standards (NFPA79, National Electric code, UL508A) and Safety standards (ANSI/ RIA15.06, OSHA)
  • Exposure to selecting and integrating a wide variety of production machinery, industrial sensors, and equipment (LVDT and pressure transducers, dispense systems, temperature controllers, robot cell, current and power meters, vision systems, etc.)
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Must be able to travel both domestically and internationally, must have and maintain a valid passport
