Job Description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by everyone; as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

The Dietitian-Diabetes Program is a member of a multidisciplinary health care team and provides nutrition care and support to clients living with all types of diabetes in accordance with established policies, standards, and procedures.

Utilizing and applying advanced knowledge and experience in relevant clinical techniques such as insulin dose adjustment. The Dietitian-Diabetes Program provides nutrition services through: nutrition assessment; care planning and charting; intervention, client goal setting and monitoring; counseling and education programs for patients/clients; orientation, guidance, and sharing of collegial information or demonstration of equipment or work processes to others including peers, new staff, and students in accordance with professional standards and program objectives.

The Dietitian-Diabetes Program provides input on regional, provincial, and local diabetes services by participating in the development of nutritional practice guidelines and procedures and by participating in research and continuous quality improvement initiatives for the program.

QUALIFICATIONS: Education, Training And Experience

  • Current registration with the College of Dietitians of British Columbia (CDBC)
  • Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) Certificate or successful completion within 3 years of hire
  • Two (2) years of recent, related experience;
  • Or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience, such as Insulin dose adjustment competency or completion of the Diabetes Educator Certificate Program from Michener Institute

  • Teaching: Ability to teach clients and others both one-on-one and in groups. Knowledge of education principles applicable to target population.
  • Knowledge Integration: Integrates best practice and current research evidence to support professional practice decisions and actions.
  • Communication: Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families, the public, medical staff and the members of the interdisciplinary team using, oral written and computer communication means. Demonstrated ability to effectively resolve conflict.
  • Critical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to integrate and evaluate pertinent data (from multiple sources) to problem-solve and make decisions effectively. Applies the problem-solving process demonstrating critical thinking and decision-making skills using a systems approach.
  • Management: Demonstrated ability to organize work, set objectives and establish priorities. Manages own time and resources, implements activities to promote cooperation among the interdisciplinary team, and collaborates across disciplines.
  • Leadership: Demonstrates creative planning for change and innovations, implementation of Island Health policies or other protocols, and ongoing professional development.
  • Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to foster teamwork and a commitment to excellence in the provision of client care.
  • Equipment: Demonstrated computer skills including the use of Meditech and Windows based programs. Demonstrated data analysis skills including appropriate data analysis and reporting tools. Demonstrated ability in the use of e-mail and word processing. Ability to operate other related equipment as required in the specific practice area.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
