Job Summary & Requirements

RVH is seeking a compassionate and motivated Recreation Therapist to join our Addiction Services team. This unique role involves working across three vital areas of our continuum of addiction care:

  • Withdrawal Management Services (WMS): An 18-bed, abstinence-based, voluntary program offering 24/7 professional monitoring and support for individuals withdrawing from psychoactive and mood-altering substances.
  • Live-In Treatment Centre: A 21-day, co-ed, 12-bed abstinence-based residential program focused on teaching healthy coping strategies and recovery tools.
  • Pre-Treatment Services: An 11-bed program providing recovery-oriented support for individuals awaiting treatment, forming Phase II of our addiction care model.

Position Summary:

As the Addiction Services Recreation Therapist, you will deliver evidence-based therapeutic recreation services across all three programs. You will work collaboratively to empower patients to acquire and maintain leisure skills, knowledge, and behaviors that enhance quality of life, support recovery, and foster independence and reintegration into the community.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver therapeutic programs that enhance physical, cognitive, emotional, and social functioning
  • Help individuals develop or re-learn leisure skills appropriate to their recovery journey and lifestyle goals
  • Foster awareness of the role of recreation in a healthy and balanced life
  • Promote the use of leisure resources in both home and community settings
  • Identify and share information about environmental barriers and how to navigate them
  • Facilitate community engagement and involvement to support post-treatment independence

Qualifications:

  • Four-year undergraduate degree
  • Postgraduate certificate in Therapeutic Recreation
  • Registration with Therapeutic Recreation Ontario (TRO)
  • Experience working with vulnerable and marginalized populations, including seniors and individuals with disabilities
  • Experience supporting individuals with addictions and/or mental health challenges

Additional Experience and Skills:

  • Experience planning and facilitating special events
  • Strong group facilitation and leadership skills
  • Collaborative team player
  • Experience in a healthcare setting (preferred), including familiarity with charting, medical terminology, and the implications of disease
  • Proficiency in computer use
  • Excellent communication, counselling, and education skills
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to manage group dynamics effectively
