Analyst/Associate, Private Equity (Funds, Co-Investments, and Secondaries)

THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Senior Principal, Private Equity, the Analyst / Associate plays a key role in making and managing external private equity fund commitments and co-investments. The role will also involve supporting secondary transaction processes, including fundamental valuation and financial modeling of private equity fund positions. The Analyst / Associate’s activities include screening, performing due diligence, and supporting the execution of new fund investments and select co-investments, ongoing monitoring of existing investments, participating in various projects, and staying abreast of trends in the private equity funds market.
Candidates will be considered for Analyst / Associate depending on individual qualifications and relevant experience.
This role will be based in our Victoria, BC office.
WHO WILL YOU WORK WITH
The Private Equity department manages a diverse portfolio of approximately $35 billion in global private equity investments comprising of fund, direct, and co-investments. The portfolio is projected to continue growing over the coming years, with an increased emphasis on direct and co-investment strategies. Our department currently consists of 74+ professionals spanning offices located in Victoria, New York City, and London organized into four sub-teams: Direct Investments, Fund Investments, Venture & Growth, Finance & Operations.
WHAT YOU BRING
- Undergraduate degree with high academic standing
- Previous internship and or 1-2 years of full-time experience (Analyst) / 2-4 years’ experience (Associate) in accounting, equity research, private equity, investment banking, management consulting, or corporate M&A
- Strong financial modeling, analytical, valuation and research skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Attention to detail
- Ability to manage projects under pressure to meet tight deadlines
- Strong business acumen and judgment
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a high-performance culture
- Proficiency with business software and analytical tools such as Capital IQ and Bloomberg
- Strong interest in private equity fund investing
- Willingness to travel
- Authorization to work in Canada
- Working towards a CFA is considered an asset (Analyst) and CFA (completion of Level 1 / 2 / 3), CPA or Master’s degree in business/economics considered an asset (Associate)
WHAT YOU WILL GET TO DO
Investment Analysis and Execution
- Supports the analysis of private equity fund and co-investment opportunities, meets with private equity fund managers, and develops fund and co-investment screening tools
- Develops investment thesis and identifies portfolio fit attributes for potential fund investments; develops investment thesis with investment merits, risks, and mitigants for new investment opportunities
- Supports secondary processes with fundamental valuation analysis and modeling of private equity fund positions
- Takes a structured approach with appropriate level of analysis in various workstreams of due diligence
- Takes a proactive role in reviewing and challenging financial projections
- Coordinates and completes some due diligence sections with minimal guidance and advanced sections with guidance
- Synthesizes findings, key analysis and supporting documents in an organized and documented manner
- Writes effective screening, deal alert and investment memorandums, and assists in coordinating the internal review/approval process
- Effectively presents diligence findings during group discussions of investment opportunities and recommendations
Portfolio Monitoring and Oversight
- Monitors assigned investments, identifying any existing or potential risk factors related to performance or other issues, including: tracking/evaluating performance metrics, ongoing review against original investment thesis, ongoing strategic fit, and significant changes impacting the investment
- Supports the development of tracking tools and processes to ensure sustained long-term returns
- Systematically develops objective and rigorous views on the long-term fit of specific fund relationships and co-investment activities to ensure ongoing strategic fit with the developing objectives of the overall private equity program
Projects/Ongoing Knowledge
- Keeps up-to-date on industry and private equity trends
- Works on specific projects to enhance team capabilities
- Develops key strategic relationships with fund managers, other limited partners, internal resources, etc.
WHERE YOU WILL WORK
Work from our downtown Victoria office. We are an in-person collaborative organization with the flexibility to work remotely 1-day a week.
SALARY RANGE
BCI offers a competitive total rewards package which includes a performance-based incentive plan, comprehensive health & dental benefits, a defined benefit pension plan and paid time off.
Depending on the skill level and relevant experience the successful candidate will be hired at one of the following levels with the annualized base salary range for this Victoria-based role:
- Analyst – CAD $115,000 – $132,000
- Associate – CAD $145,000 – $160,000
The base salary offered to the successful candidate will consider a wide array of factors including but not limited to the individual’s skill set, level of experience applicable to the role they are being offered and consideration to internal equity.
We pay our people competitively in the markets in which we operate and with consideration to internal equity and job structure. We aim for actual pay to be around the median of the market for target or expected levels of performance, and around the upper quartile of the market for excellent performance.
Actual salaries may vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors, including, but not limited to, experience and expertise.
