Job Summary

Bridges & Structures Employees work outside assisting with replacing or repairing worn or broken components and fabrication, and erection of new components for timber, concrete and steel railway structures, including bridges and culverts. This position leads to advanced positions within Bridges & Structures, such as Steel Bridge Worker and / or Carpenter.

Major Responsibilities

  • Fabrication, Assembly and Erection of Timber, Concrete and Steel Railway Bridge Components
  • Use of various common and specialized hand tools
  • Use of various air, hydraulic and electric tools
  • Preparation and minor maintenance of tools for assigned work
  • Removal and replacement of defective bridge, culvert and other structural components
  • Loading/unloading, sorting, shoveling and distribution of various materials
  • Clean-up after work completion

Working Conditions

Employees work in a unionized environment as crew members to perform various maintenance, repair and replacement tasks, in a safety sensitive environment around heavy moving equipment outdoors in all weather conditions.

Exposure to harsh outdoor weather conditions (heat and cold) and noisy conditions.

Requirements

  • Ability to follow strict guidelines regarding safe work practices in a safety sensitive environment
  • Capable of climbing and working at heights using fall protection equipment
  • Physical labour experience is a definite asset including lifting, occasionally heavy lifting
  • Ability to lift from 50 lbs to 85 lbs
  • Capable of working various shifts, including night, weekend & holidays
  • Required to work away from home sometimes for extended periods of time
  • Completion of high school or a general equivalency diploma (GED)

This position is a unionized position, as such pay and benefits are governed by the applicable Collective Agreement.



Paid Training

Successful candidates will take part in a paid four-week training program at a CN Campus (Winnipeg, MB) with additional on-the-job training to help ensure that they have received the adequate knowledge to operate in accordance with regulatory requirements and CN’s safety standards. The training is primarily on health and safety rules as successful completion of the classroom and on-the-job training is required to continue employment as a Steel Bridge Worker at CN.
