Responsibilities
The part-time Research Technician will work in collaboration with principal investigators, staff, and students, and have responsibilities for conducting experiments and presenting the results. The incumbent will oversee students, assist with laboratory or research centre maintenance, order supplies, and ensure safety standards are met. The incumbent will set up and conduct tests according to procedures, maintain records, and analyze, summarize and compile data and results for dissemination.
Responsibilities:
- Preparation and submission of animal ethics protocols
- Preparation and submission of controlled drug exemption forms
- Assist with animal research experiments and laboratory safety inspections
- Ordering supplies and materials for animal experiments
- Provide support for the Lab Manager as required
Qualifications
Education:
- Post-secondary diploma in Animal Health Technology
- Up-to-date registration as a Registered Veterinary Technician in Ontario
- Registration as a Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT) in good standing
Experience:
- At least five years working in a research related field
- Familiarity with Western University and Lawson Health Research Institute research policies and procedures will be an asset
Skills, Abilities & Expertise:
- Familiarity with animal ethics applications
- Familiarity with Health Canada drug regulations
- Familiarity with experimental design and analysis
- Familiarity with the techniques for updating, managing, and extracting data from research databases
- Attention to detail with the ability to collect, retrieve, analyze, and synthesize sizeable amounts of data in an objective manner, while ensuring that the information is accurate and comprehensive
- Excellent verbal and written communication, with the ability to communicate general and scientific information effectively to scientists, staff, and students
- Ability to work independently and to make appropriate decisions
- Good judgement, initiative, tact, and professionalism
- Computer skills with the ability to learn and use software programs
- Adaptable, flexible, and resourceful
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
