LABOUR RELATIONS ADVISOR
Location: OCDSB Administration Building; 133 Greenbank Road Nepean, ON
Position Status: 1.0 Regular, Full-time
Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week
Affiliation: Union Exempt
Salary range: $85,231 to $100,231 per annum
Job Summary
Reporting to the Team Manager(s), Labour Relations, the Labour Relations Advisor provides support to the Team Managers in all matters related to labour relations including but not limited to the grievance/arbitration process, and the negotiation/collective bargaining process. The Labour Relations Advisor liaises with internal and external stakeholders, including Employee Services staff, managers/supervisors and union representatives with a view to promoting a positive labour/management environment.

A Masters Degree in Industrial Relations is considered an asset.
Strong understanding of human resources and labour relations practices such as collective bargaining and grievance procedures is required; Knowledge of relevant legislation such as the Education Act, Labour Relations Act, Human Rights Code, Employment Standards Act.
Excellent communication skills to deal with employees, federation/union representatives, on complex and sometimes emotional and/or confrontational issues, with tact and discretion, is required.
Advanced written communication skills in order to take accurate and detailed notes and draft a variety of documents for negotiations, grievance hearings and arbitrations, etc.
Strong research and analytical skills required, including initiative and judgment skills required for resolving problems and conflicts.
High degree of discretion is required, including using tact and diplomacy.
Must be able to work independently, with minimal direction and supervision.
Ability to juggle multiple priorities in a fast paced environment and meet tight timelines.
Excellent proficiency in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and google applications to effectively perform work.

- Processing grievances, tracking collective agreement timelines and providing information and advice to supervisors and managers with a view to avoiding Collective Agreement breaches/union disputes;
- Investigating factual background of grievances, including consultation with appropriate Employer representatives to assist in understanding merit and/or risk of the Employer’s position;
- Drafting written responses to grievances at all stages of the grievance process; attending, documenting and participating in grievance hearings;
- Routinely researching trends, jurisprudence, and changes to legislation in order to prepare for upcoming rounds of negotiations;
- Taking accurate and detailed notes, in order to maintain an official record at all negotiations/collective bargaining meetings, labour management meetings, etc.;
- Participating, as required, as a member on Pay Equity committees in order to assist in representing the Employer’s team.
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in Human Resources Management or a related field and 5 years of Human Resources or Labour Relations experience within a unionized environment. An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
- Certified Human Resources Practitioner (CHRP) or Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) is considered an asset.
- A Masters Degree in Industrial Relations is considered an asset.
