The Sr. Director, Sourcing is responsible for providing leadership and direction to the Sourcing Category Director(s) in order to meet enterprise, banner and category goals and objectives. The role is involved in the strategic planning, strategic sourcing, vendor management, product development for the category, and also oversees vendor performance (i.e. product availability and cost) to enable the Merchandising teams to accomplish their category strategy and KPIs (i.e. sales, margin, NPS, etc.)

The Sr. Director, Sourcing will work as part of the Sourcing team that will be relentlessly focused on securing the best value for the enterprise. The Sourcing team will negotiate with vendors to purchase products for both the Discount and Market divisions and leverage the scale of the organization to drive lower costs for the customer. The team also serves as a subject matter expert for costing in the enterprise.

Accountabilities:

Leadership & People Management

  • Partner with the VP of Fresh Sourcing to ensure alignment to overall strategy and objectives, review post-mortem analysis that evaluate effectiveness, highlight key learnings and identify future opportunities for improvement, and deliver improved performance metrics in areas such as Sales, Market Share, Trading & Contribution Margin, Tonnage (Article Growth), and Net Promoter Score Oversees Sourcing team members to conduct and review post-mortem analysis on the effectiveness of vendor management and sourcing, and implements opportunities for improvement
  • Collaborate with other key business leads: Merchandising, Loyalty & Analytics etc. to define and deliver improved performance metrics in areas such as Plan-On-Time, Promotional Effectiveness (e.g. Cost per Sales Dollar), and other Customer-Centric Metrics
  • Provides strong leadership, strategic direction, and planning to Sourcing Category Directors to enhance and drive Sourcing performance
  • Meets with Sourcing Category Director team members to oversee work, provide feedback, provide coaching and mentorship, identify training needs, and assess performance
  • Coach and mentor talent within the Sourcing team and on broader enterprise teams

Category & Merchandising Strategy

  • Leads select vendor negotiations for strategic vendors, and drives metrics pertaining to vendor quality and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
  • Supports Sourcing Category Directors when vendor conflicts arise, and leads any issue resolution for key vendors and key accounts
  • Provides ideas and input to Senior Category Director in Merchandising to support category annual planning and innovation, based on knowledge of sourcing and market trends

Assortment & Planogram Management

  • Sourcing new and innovative products and vendors by attending industry trade shows or other mechanisms, in order to build a point of strategic differentiation in the Fresh department across Loblaw banners
  • Collaborate with current vendors to build new capabilities or products to meet the category’s strategic plan

Pricing & Promotions Management

  • Works with the Commodity Cost Review team to assess how vendor costs are tracking relative to market trends
  • Lead the Sourcing Category Director teams to source with a bias for fair and equitable economic cost for the Loblaw enterprise, without sacrificing quality and integrity

Vendor Management

  • Meets with Senior Category Director(s)/Category Director(s) in Merchandising to understand sourcing needs, and to identify and evaluate vendors based on a set of criteria/scorecard to select the best vendor and ensure current vendors are meeting industry consistent standards
  • Supports negotiations with vendors for baseline Over & Above (O&A) case rates and annual agreements to drive category strategy and enterprise objectives
  • Participates in the Joint Business Planning (JBP) process, leveraging reports and materials created by the JBP team and meets with the Merchandising teams in advance to plan initiatives and annual building blocks.

Role Requirements:

  • 5-7 years of business experience in sourcing or merchandising role
  • Excellent communicator up, down and across the enterprise
  • Strong Financial Acumen and experience managing P&L statements
  • A strong understanding of the market and competitive landscape in order to recognize and capitalize on opportunities
  • Proven strength in having a ‘customer lens’ in all decision making process
  • Proven ability to develop short and long term plans in line with corporate strategies
  • Progressive and innovative: aggressively seeks out opportunities to improve competitiveness and demonstrates an innovative spirit.
  • Ability to gather and synthesize customer, competitor and market insight and information
  • Strong data management and analytical skills with strict attention to detail and the ability to develop business insights and effectively communicate them to the business
  • Creative problem solver and strategic thinker with a strong work ethic
  • Proven ability to deliver results in a high-pressure environment with the ability to set priorities and meet challenging deadlines.
  • An effective change agent who possesses the influencing skills needed to help the organization adopt new ways of thinking and to embrace more sophisticated business tools
  • Ability to coach and mentor direct reports and team with a focus on Colleague Development
  • Post-secondary education (university or professionally accredited college) or equivalent experience
