Responsibilities
Reporting to the Vice-Provost, Students, The Manager, Student Code of Conduct leads the non-academic behaviour management and discipline process of the Western University community and oversees investigations under the University Student Code of Conduct (non-academic).
The Manager provides legal advice and representation to the University on matters related to the Student Code of Conduct, offering strategic guidance to senior academic and administrative leaders to manage legal risks and protect the University’s reputation and interests. The role involves receiving and investigating complaints, adjudicating cases, and assigning outcomes in accordance with the Code, while upholding principles of procedural fairness. Through the use of restorative and educational approaches, the role also creates and sustains an effective learning environment by designing educational sanctions and outcomes, based in restorative principles, which foster ethical development, personal accountability, and contributes to a learning environment that supports the broader educational mission of the University.
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor of Law (LLB) or Juris Doctor (JD)
- Active membership in the Law Society of Ontario (licensed to practice in Ontario and in good standing)
- Formal Mediation Certificate is preferred
- Training in Violence Risk and Threat Assessment; Violence Response and Investigation would be an asset
Experience:
- 5 years’ experience practicing law and providing legal advice on administrative law issues
- Experience in behaviour management, conduct, or judicial affairs
- Experience in trauma-informed practice
- Mediation experience and/or experience with alternative dispute resolution and resultative justice model
- Experience interacting and establishing credibility with multiple stakeholders while maintaining collaborative working relationships preferred
- Previous experience within a University setting would be an asset
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of legal frameworks relevant to student conduct, including administrative law, human rights law, privacy legislation (e.g. FIPPA), and legal considerations related to discrimination and procedural fairness in a university context
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and confidence dealing with all levels of an organization
- Possesses a reputation for resourcefulness with a strong sense of accountability and initiative
- Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
- Ability to handle diverse situations, multiple projects and rapidly changing priorities
- Self-driven, independent thinker who is highly motivated and possesses an intrinsic passion for quality
- High degree of professionalism with outstanding ability to work effectively and efficiently with internal and external clients at all levels of management
- Creative problem-solving skills and sound professional judgment, especially regarding confidential/sensitive matters
- Demonstrated ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development
- Ability to make decisions and recommendations that are clearly linked to the organization's strategy and goals
- Ability to handle details with a high degree of accuracy and to organize and prioritize a high volume of work to meet deadlines
- Ability to identify and respond to contentious or politically sensitive issues with discretion
- Conflict resolution skills with an ability to proactively identify potential conflicts and support actions to facilitate resolution
- Ability to understand, interpret, and effectively communicate University guidelines, policies, and practices to key stakeholders
- Intermediate computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
- Capacity to handle risk and uncertainty, while being decisive in ambiguous situations
