The Trauma & Crisis Interventionist provides intake, assessment, individual service plans, brief and ongoing sessions of individual counselling, and provides clients with information about other relevant services. The Trauma & Crisis Interventionist assists clients in addressing trauma and working toward identified goals. They also maintain respect for client dignity and maximum client self-determination and independence in provision of services, as well as adheres to clinical and client best practices.

The Trauma & Crisis Interventionist leads and works closely with internal/external multi-disciplinary teams in development of individualized care plans and utilizes a variety of specialized treatment modalities/therapies for individuals and groups of clients.

This person will execute their position in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Core Values of JHSOK.

Key Accountabilities

  • Apply theoretical knowledge of trauma and/or crisis interventions within the counselling process, demonstrating an ability to assess for and manage trauma appropriately.
  • Promote quality outcomes for clients and work towards building resiliency skills that allow client independence from service.
  • Facilitate a range of evidence-based and culturally competent counselling and psychotherapy modalities for individuals and groups, such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), mindfulness, dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), and trauma-informed care.
  • Conduct client assessments and ensure interventions have clear linkages to the initial assessment of identified need and align with client case plans.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams both internally and externally, liaise and consult with physicians, governmental and community social service, health and mental health agencies and other members of the circle of care on a regular and timely basis.


MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Trauma & Crisis Intervention Supports & Services

Contribute to client well-being and experience through:

  • Ensuring a trauma-informed approach to care founded on Well-Work values occurs
  • Utilizing person centered practices and strengths-based approaches
  • Providing care in accordance with the Scope of Practice for the relevant credentialing body
  • Assisting clients to work towards their goals as well improve their overall quality of life
  • Demonstrating proficiency in counseling techniques, assessment methods, and treatment planning
  • Incorporating culturally safe practice and promotes a safe place for diverse populations, including LGBTQ+ and Indigenous populations
  • Recognizing and managing risk, and ensures action are taken to prevent/ minimize harm
  • Developing and delivering trauma and crisis interventions supports such as delivery of individual and group counseling to clients, developing, implementing and monitoring case plans through collaboration with clients and circle of care
  • Performing initial screening/intake of referrals from internal sources to determine service fit, urgency of request and best practices
  • Conducting initial assessments and developing personalized treatment plans tailored to each client’s strengths and needs and regularly review throughout the therapeutic relationship
  • Investigating elevated client issues while coaching and supporting staff on complex persons served behaviors and issues
  • Recognizing, and leading in the handling of potential mental health emergencies; Leading in debriefing and crisis follow up of incident reports
  • Providing referrals to appropriate community resources/services
  • Advocating on behalf of clients through education and working to fix the specific impact clients are experiencing because of issues causing barriers


Operational Excellence

Operationalize the program vision and culture deck of JHSOK by:

  • Upholding high degree of professionalism when representing JHSOK with community stakeholders
  • Supporting and working collaboratively with JHSOK care team members; attend and contribute to client case conferencing. Initiate client case conferences as appropriate
  • Contributing to policy and procedures required by regulatory bodies, funder compliance and JHSOK in collaboration with the Senior Director of Housing and CEO; Ensuring policy and procedures are operationalized
  • Developing (in collaboration with SDHS and CEO) and implementing performance and outcome monitoring goals
  • Supporting the Senior Director of Housing in handling stakeholder issues
  • Ensuring familiarity with other programs and services offered by JHSOK and other service providers
  • Developing an understanding of funding and administrative arrangements of the program


Administration

Work within JHSOK’s resource realities by:

  • Documenting: completes and is responsible for thorough documentation practices; accurate and timely documenting related to client case planning; Leading and ensuring the program and administrative documenting and monitoring procedures as outlined in JHSOK policies occurs, including timely documenting related to client case planning and interventions
  • Maintaining records of client activities, to ensure effective service delivery, including documenting information /observations/ impressions which may affect a client’s case plan; Maintaining written progress reports; adopting and using ShareVision
  • Developing and maintaining an understanding of funding and administrative arrangements of the program; working in accordance with the divisional budget


JOB CONDITIONS

  • Function independently, while remaining a crucial member of the team
  • Working with person(s) served who may solicit and/or display inappropriate social or physical behaviour including inappropriate language or violence


SKILLS, EDUCATION, CLINICAL EXPERIENCE, COMPETENCIES

  • BA in social work, psychology, or sociology, plus relevant education/training in trauma and crisis response
  • Good standing registration with BCACC, BCASW, or CCC
  • Advanced client intervention skills developed from a combination of 3+ years of direct client work experience in a counselling, crisis counselling, front-line, or therapeutic environment
  • 2+ years-experience in working with individuals who have experienced acute, chronic and/or complex trauma
  • Ability to clear a Criminal Record Check, Vulnerable Sector
  • Valid First Aid with CPR
  • Willingness and ability to see a minimum average of 20 clients per week
  • In depth knowledge of community resources and strong collaborative skills in working with other community partners
  • Demonstrated ability to address, plan, organize, implement, evaluate and problem-solve, and organize and prioritize workload in a complex environment
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Flexibility and excellent engagement skills; demonstrated collaboration and relationship building skills particularly with diverse populations and community stakeholders
  • Ability to use computer programs: Microsoft Word and Outlook; Able and willing to learn and use other computer platforms: ShareVision, Payworks, WorkVivo, etc.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License and access to a personal vehicle for work-related purposes.
