Detailed Overview
Reporting to the Clinical Practice Leader, Speech Language Pathology and/or Audiology, the Hearing Screener conducts hearing screening tests on newborn infants. The Hearing Screener identifies infants for screening based on pre-set criteria set by the Early Hearing Program, conducts screening using computerized hearing screening equipment, monitors and troubleshoots computerized hearing screening equipment, reviews, edits and disseminates patient materials, documents and communicates results. In addition, this position promotes awareness of hearing loss. The Hearing Screener works cooperatively with families, professionals, agencies and community members to facilitate a team approach in addressing the hearing-related needs of newborns and their families.

Education and Experience
Completion of BC Early Hearing Screening Program plus one (1) year's recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Detailed Overview

The Hearing Screener identifies infants for screening based on pre-set criteria set by the Early Hearing Program, conducts screening using computerized hearing screening equipment, monitors and troubleshoots computerized hearing screening equipment, reviews, edits and disseminates patient materials, documents and communicates results. In addition, this position promotes awareness of hearing loss. The Hearing Screener works cooperatively with families, professionals, agencies and community members to facilitate a team approach in addressing the hearing-related needs of newborns and their families.
Responsibilities
- Identifies infants from the general newborn population who are eligible for hearing screening in accordance with Early Hearing Program criteria as well as the processes and procedures of the site by assessing the infant's status and communicating with caregivers.
- Conducts hearing screenings on infants meeting the preset criteria, including cleaning skin, attaching electrodes, inserting earphones/tips and conducting the computerized hearing screening.
- Documents screening results in patient charts by use of a stamp and designation of screening pass or refer. Completes all required program documentation by typing and entering data using computerized equipment.
- Monitors and troubleshoots the functioning of screening and other equipment by checking function, replacing batteries, cleaning/disinfecting units and making arrangements for repairs including ongoing calibration.
- Reviews, edits and disseminates patient materials, including informational brochures and correspondence to families.
- Conducts a review of patient risk factors in collaboration with nursing staff and observes newborn/infant to confirm the presence or absence of preset hearing risk factors.
- Communicates with family members and professionals regarding screening results, general hearing information and promotes compliance with follow up appointments by use of the phone, fax and email.
- Monitors stock, supplies and equipment, reporting shortages and preparing necessary forms to requisition for purposes of inventory control.
- Records workload data for statistical purposes. Completes, maintains and submits computerized and manual statistics.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
Completion of BC Early Hearing Screening Program plus one (1) year's recent, related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

- Ability to keyboard at 45 w.p.m.
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to organize work.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
- Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
