Job Summary

Under the direction and supervision of a Teacher, the Educational Assistant will:

  • As part of a team, plan and support students with exceptional needs- 2 ½ kindergarten sessions with a small group of students alongside the classroom teacher;
  • Attend training sessions with board staff, including data collection, health and safety, kindergarten readiness, social skills assessment;
  • Assist student in completing tasks, following routines, navigating play
  • Assist in identifying student strengths and needs;
  • Gather data on play skills, kindergarten readiness, ability to follow routines;
  • Alongside board staff, SERT and classroom teacher ,assist in the interpretation and assessment of data to complete a Learner Profile and assist in setting preliminary goals to be shared with the receiving school.

Qualifications

  • 2 or 3 year Community College Diploma in Educational Assistant, Autism and Behaviour Management, Developmental Services Worker, Youth Worker Program, Early Childhood Education or Social Services;
  • 3-6 months previous related experience;
  • Candidates must be physically able to perform the essential duties of the position.

  • Proven ability to deal with confidential information in a discrete manner
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Working knowledge of computers and relevant software programs
  • Be a member of the collaborate team
  • Capable of working with a wide variety of students with special needs
  • Demonstrated competency in oral and written communication skills
  • A broad knowledge of child development and teaching skills

Physical Requirements

  • Intermittent physical activity including walking, standing, sitting, lifting and supporting students
  • Regular to frequent requirement, and as needed to lift children, including bending, stooping, stretching, squatting, pushing and pulling
  • Ability and willingness to perform required physical tasks

Preferred Assets

  • BMS Training
  • Qualifications and experience with ABA
  • Understanding of behaviour management strategies
  • Experience working with individuals with ADHD/ODD
  • Self-motivated, critical thinking, with proven team skills and exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
