Work environment

At Fleet Maintenance Facility (FMF) we offer a variety of opportunities for tradespersons, professionals, apprentices, and students to work in a large ship repair yard with approximately 1000 employees. Our civilian and military employees work together to provide agile, quality engineering and technical service to support the Royal Canadian Navy Fleet. Occupational Certification:

Possession of a valid Provincial or Territorial Trade Certificate relevant to the position; Interprovincial Red Seal Certificate of qualification relevant to the position;

OR

Acceptable (at time of application) equivalent Canadian Armed Forces qualification for applicable trades based on the position to be staffed;

OR

An acceptable combination of education, training, or experience relevant to the position being staffed.



Experience:

  • Experience in the field related to the position being staffed.
  • Experience will be assessed in terms of the depth, breadth of activities, the complexity and diversity of work handled, relevancy of activities and transferability of the specific skillset required for the position.

Experience:

The following or any additional experience can be invoked for any of the positions being staffed:

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (such as Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
  • Experience working in a ship repair facility
  • Experience working with safety practices and work procedures in an industrial environment
  • Experience working with an Occupational Health and Safety Committee
  • Experience working or volunteering in a mixed civilian and military environment
  • Experience with Ship Piping Systems
  • Experience with Ship Ventilation Systems
  • Experience with Hull Structure repairs



Abilities:

The following qualifications are only applicable to the Electronics Technicians (SR EEW 10):

  • Ability to read and interpret electronic schematics/drawings
  • Ability to diagnose faults and repair electronic equipment
  • Ability to use Electronics Troubleshooting Techniques
  • Ability to apply Digital and Analog Electronics Theory

Operational Requirements:

Managers may establish operational requirements specific to the position being staffed. These requirements will be communicated to the candidates considered for that specific appointment. These requirements may be, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25kgs/50lbs.
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 35kg/75lbs with full range of motion applicable to Riggers (SR PRW 08) only.
  • Willing and able to work overtime and shift.
  • Willing and able to work in adverse conditions or environments which may include, but not limited to, confined spaces, heights, and extreme weather conditions.
  • Willingness and able to travel domestically or internationally.
  • Required to lift and carry heavy objects, tools and equipment (up to 25 kgs/50lbs and in some case above 35kg/75lbs) throughout worksite and up/down ladders.
  • Requirement to work in confined spaces and heights (including climbing of masts).
  • Requirement to perform duties at sea (on various classes of ships or submarines) and transfers at sea.

Conditions of employment



Conditions Of Employment:

Various security clearance levels, including Secret and reliability.

  • Strict adherence to the Department of National Defence and Canadian Forces Code of Values and Ethics, Values and Ethics Code for the Public Sector, Directive on Conflict of Interest, and Defence Administrative Orders and Directives (DAOD) 7021-1, Conflict of Interest
  • Willing and able to obtain and maintain a DND 404 driving permit
  • Required to work overtime and shift work.
  • Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment.
  • Required to climb vertical ladders, and also access cramped and/or confined spaces.
  • Required to work in an environment that may contain High Hazard Industrial chemical or contain noxious fumes.
  • Required to conduct at-sea trials in naval vessels, occasionally over a period of days.
  • Required to maintain regulated trade certification (such as safety certifications)
  • Required to work in dirty and/or noisy environments.
