Position Overview
Calian is seeking a Medical Laboratory Assistant for the outpatient clinic located on Canadian Forces Health Service Centre at the Monfort Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario. Calian is open to consider candidates interested in either full time or part time hours. Clinic hours are Monday to Friday starting 7:30 – 4:00pm.
Responsibilities
The required tasks for this occupational group include the following:
- Perform venipuncture on adult patients.
- Collect and process specimens while maintaining sample integrity and providing patient instructions.
- Conduct basic lab tests (e.g., urinalysis, pregnancy tests).
- Enter patient and specimen data into lab systems and logs.
- Investigate and correct requisition errors; label, centrifuge, and separate samples.
- Handle body fluid measurements and 24-hour urine collections for external testing.
- Package and label specimens per TDG regulations; prepare waybills and maintain compliance records.
- Respond to phone inquiries about testing procedures, times, and results.
- Prioritize and process samples based on urgency (immediate vs. routine).
- Distribute lab materials and results via fax, courier, and postal services.
- Maintain supply inventory and restock as needed.
- Clean and organize lab equipment and workspaces.
- Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications
All Medical Laboratory Assistant must, as a minimum, possess:
- Diploma from a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program
- Certificate of registration as a Medical Laboratory Assistant from the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) or equivalent provincial or territorial organization in the province or territory of practice
- Two years of experience working in a clinical laboratory setting and performing phlebotomy
- Certificate of Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Provider or equivalent such as Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) Level C.

- You will be able to obtain a Government Security Clearance at the Reliability level
