Reporting to the Director, Evaluation, Impact and Professional Practice, the Indigenous Relations Coordinator plays a pivotal role within the Alex Community Health Centre to advance our services in the context of indigenous ways of knowing, being, and achieving health. The Indigenous Relations Coordinator works in collaboration with internal and external partners to support the implementation of The Alex’s Indigenous Health Strategy, grounded in the principles of reconciliation and respect for Indigenous knowledge systems. This role supports staff and leadership across the organization in integrating Indigenous perspectives into service delivery, with the aim of reducing health inequities for Indigenous people and fostering culturally safe care.

This is a permanent, full-time position.

What You Will Do

Program Support & Coordination

  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of initiatives that integrate Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and healing into The Alex's services.
  • Collaborate with teams across the organization in planning culturally responsive services and programming for Indigenous clients.
  • Provide support to ELT as needed for meeting coordination with The Alex Indigenous Elder Advisory Council and other Indigenous partners.
  • Collaborate with program teams to ensure that Indigenous voices and perspectives are reflected in planning and evaluation efforts.
  • Help gather and share relevant information to support Indigenous health planning and reporting.

Relationship Building

  • Build and maintain respectful relationships with Indigenous communities, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other key community partners.
  • Support collaboration between internal staff and external Indigenous service providers and organizations.
  • Coordinate and lead The Alex Indigenous Gathering Group and support its ongoing work.

Education & Awareness

  • Support cultural learning and training initiatives for Alex staff to strengthen cultural competence and awareness.
  • Coordinate opportunities for staff to engage in cultural teachings and ceremonies, in consultation with Elders and community partners.
  • Actively participate in the JEDI Committee to ensure cultural considerations are front and centre for The Alex.
  • Working with the People & Culture Team, represent The Alex at external recruitment events.
  • Share relevant resources and best practices related to Indigenous health and wellness.

Community Engagement

  • Act as a liaison between The Alex and Indigenous stakeholders to support culturally safe and appropriate service delivery.
  • Assist in organizing community meetings, cultural events, and learning opportunities for staff and clients.
  • Promote and facilitate the active involvement and engagement of Indigenous Peoples in shaping The Alex’s programs and policies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

What You Bring

  • A diploma or undergraduate degree in health, social services, Indigenous studies, or a related discipline; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience working with Indigenous communities, Indigenous Elders, and multijurisdictional partners, or in Indigenous health settings.
  • Familiarity with Indigenous worldviews, knowledge systems, and cultural practices, particularly as they relate to urban Indigenous populations.
  • Experience supporting collaborative projects or initiatives in a health or social services environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work respectfully across cultures.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate activities, manage multiple priorities, and work independently with guidance.
  • First Aid (Basic or Intermediate) – Level C CPR & AED within 30 days of hire date; certification must be valid for a minimum of 6 months upon hire.
  • A satisfactory vulnerable sector criminal record clearance and child welfare intervention check are required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action is preferred.

Work Environment And Hours

  • The Alex Community Health Centre: 2840 – 2 Ave SE, Calgary, AB
  • 1.0 FTE (37.5 hrs/week)
  • Standard hours are 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday; some flexibility in schedule may be available .
  • Continuous periods of sitting, standing and walking (sometimes up/down stairwells).
  • Occasional physical activity requires the ability to bend/crouch, reach above shoulder height, kneel/crawl, and carry objects (up to 20 lbs.).
