Job Description
The position will support Customer Service Supervisors and Customer Service Coordinators in their relationships with customers. The position will also be the commercial support resource to special projects as they arise, including, assisting operations with coverage.
The Assistant Commercial Manager has primary accountability for the interface between Seaspan Ferries and the sales and operational contacts for the Tier 1 and 2 customers. In addition, this position will provide support to the Commercial Managers, specifically with respect to Tier 3 to Tier 7 customers. The Assistant Commercial Manager must be able to problem solve and have an extensive understanding of the trucking industry, product movements between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, transportation offerings from our major competitors and other modes of commercial transportation to and from the island.
Note: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 7700 Hopcott Road, Delta.

What You’ll Do
- Maintains the logistical needs of customer base and provides sales proposals and quotations.
- Responsible for ongoing liaison with decision makers of existing and potential accounts.
- Provides operational leadership by maintaining open communications, acting as the point of escalation for customer issues and promoting corporate standards and initiatives.
- Ensures that customer needs and the dynamics of the market are understood and translated back to the business.
- Reviews fleet utilization to improve timing of bringing on new assets to support volumes.
- Supports management with evaluating financial reports and budget forecasting.
- Supports credit checks for new customers and presents contracts and third-party invoicing for approval.
- Ensures compliance with handling and transportation of dangerous goods.
- Environmental Management System (EMS) representative for all Commercial Business groups, which includes working on action plans, risk registers, and spill reporting.
- Participates in various associations, committees, and keeps up to date with industry trends.
- Collaborates with operations, and assists with coverage, when and where needed.
- Creates and manages reports and presentations for weekly, monthly, and yearly reviews.
- Manages reservation profiles for all customers.
- Manages and coordinates meetings with customers on a daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly basis.
- Ensures that all Seaspan Marine Group (SMG) corporate policies and initiatives are implemented and adhered to within the department and in all business dealings.
- Assists with departmental budgeting and forecasting.
- Performs additional duties as required.
- Post-Secondary education in a relevant discipline (transportation and logistics preferred, business education with transportation experience considered).
- 5 - 7 years’ experience in the transportation, preferably trucking industry in an operational or customer focused management role.
- Flexibility and ability to travel to different locations across Vancouver Island and the BC Mainland, which may occasionally require overnight stays.
- Strong leadership skills including influencing and demonstrating best practices.
- Shows the ability to clearly articulate business unit direction and goals.
- Ability to build long-term relationships with customers, prospects and industry leaders.
- Ability to recognize new business opportunities and develop well researched strategies that will result in new customer orders.
- Excellent communication skills, including listening, written and oral proficiency.
- A proven track record of success in account management with a history of delivering superior customer service.
- Demonstration of a high level of teamwork, self motivated leadership, lateral thinking and a focus on continuous improvement.
- Effective presentation skills and an ability to prioritize and manage work.
- A thorough understanding of the BC trucking industry.
- Knowledge of marine transportation, short sea shipping and the BC coastal industry is preferred.
- Basic understanding of finance, revenue generation, profit and loss recognition is preferred.
- Proficient in MS Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, Power Apps, etc.).
