Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Manager, Structural & Grounds, the Foreman – Cabinetmaker/Joiner provides direction and support to the cabinetry team .

This position coordinates, establishes , and performs a diverse range of cabinetry activities, including providing technical support and training to other trades and district staff. This position is responsible for conducting and supervising the inspection, maintenance, repair, and installation of cabinetry activities .

This position provides supervisory leadership to the cabinetry team in the form of coordinating work and providing coaching and training. This position is responsible for departmental decision making, determining project work, preventative maintenance, providing estimates, and advising on and assisting with cabinetry activities .

The work involves the performance of a variety of complex tasks under limited supervision in accordance with limited access to established procedures . This position requires current and proficient knowledge in the field . A high level of judgment is exercised in handling assignments and determining new work methods.

Specific Accountabilities

Trades Duties :

  • Coordinate the completion of cabinetry projects, including meeting with clients to discuss the project, provide drawing and estimate installation schedules.
  • Manufacture, fabricate, assemble and install cabinetry using specialty machinery .
  • Coordinate the delivery and pick-up of cabinetry.
  • Engage in trouble-shooting activities to resolve cabinetry issues.
  • Responding to service calls as required .

Supervisory Duties

  • Perform supervisory duties pertaining to Cabinetmaker/Joiner staff.
  • Allocate staff to projects and work to ensure they are completed within the required standard and in a timely manner, using a computerized work order system.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations including allocation of work, coordinate logistics with stakeholders, plan for the completion of work, and arrange contracts as required.
  • Ensure that the quality and quantity of work performed meets the established and acceptable standards and conforms to established specifications, regulations and codes.
  • Ensure adequate supplies are on hand. Submit orders/requisitions and ensure that orders and equipment are received and properly stored, maintained and used in accordance with district standards as required .
  • Estimate materials, staffing, and time required for various projects.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of work in progress, the estimated time required for completion, and the resources required . Advise the Manager, or designate well in advance of potential problems, including a recommendation of corrective action.
  • Assist in the selection of staff. Ensure consistency of employee’s performance.
  • Ensure safe work practices are followed by all Cabinetmaker/Joiner staff .
  • Communicate with a broad range of individuals on a regular basis including clients, students, management, external suppliers, inspectors and contractors.
  • Maintain and prepare written records and reports as required .
  • Monitor the work of outside agencies and contractors.
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to the school district.
  • Maintain detailed knowledge of district facilities and maintenance practices of the district.
  • Maintain working knowledge of district operational/personnel policies related to the position.
  • Perform all other such duties as may be assigned by the Manager, or designate, including new and unusual matters.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

Grade 12 diploma , or equivalent , supplemented by a current British Columbia or Interprovincial Trades Qualification in Cabinetmaker/Joinery; and successful completion of a Supervisory Skills credit course. A minimum of 5 years’ recent experience in a related field; and 2 years’ recent supervisory experience . A valid Class 5 B C Driver’s License . As well, incumbents also require the following:

  • Proven ability to use Microsoft Office programs, internet and internet-based programs, with the ability to learn other software programs;
  • Positive interpersonal and leadership skills, and the ability to develop teams and foster an environment which promotes team work ;
  • Proven ability to determine , judge and select appropriate courses of action in accordance with established policies and procedures;
  • Understanding and awareness of cultural diversity;
  • Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize, self-motivate, and meet deadlines;
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to provide service and relationship to the public and School District in a professional, respectful, positive and courteous manner;
  • Proven ability to establish and maintain positive, effective work relationships in a team environment at all times ;
  • Proven ability to use tact and discretion and maintain confidentiality in matters pertaining to the School District;
  • Working knowledge of WHMIS and WorkSafe BC occupational health and safety regulations and the demonstrated ability to work in a manner that recognizes personal safety and the safety of others;
  • Ability to be flexible, adaptable and resilient to change;
  • Ability to explain complex or simple instructions or information clearly to others;
  • Working knowledge of the regulations and codes, trade standard practices, methods, materials, tools, technology and equipment used in the Cabinetmaker/Joiner trade;
  • Working knowledge of school district facilities and maintenance practices;
  • Working knowledge of technical drawings, blueprints, sketches, and building plans;
  • Working knowledge of current provincial and municipal regulations and fire codes .
