This is a NHS Lewisham & Greenwich Trust work experience placement, within the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Estates & Facilities Department.

Key Details Of The Placement

  • 5 day-placement, Mon – Fri
  • Between Monday 30th June – Friday 25th July
  • 9AM – 5PM

Tasks Completed During Placement

Intro to SSD Workflow:

  • Understand how surgical instruments are cleaned, sterilised, and made ready for reuse.

Wash Room Tour

  • Observe sorting and decontamination of used instruments.
  • See manual and machine cleaning (ultrasonic and washer-disinfectors).

IAP Room Visit

  • Watch inspection and reassembly of instrument sets.
  • Learn how items are packed and labeled for sterilisation.

Autoclave Area

  • See how instruments are sterilised using steam autoclaves.
  • Learn about testing methods to ensure effective sterilisation.

Safety & Quality

  • Understand PPE use, infection control, and quality checks.
