Temporary to June 2028, 1.00 FTE

The Burnaby School District is on the traditional territory of the Coast Salish Nations of Musqueam, Tsleil- Waututh and Squamish.

The Burnaby School District is the fourth largest in BC. The District operates 41 elementary and 8 secondary schools, including a range of district and provincial resource programs. The District supports and provides learning to 25,000 Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) students and to more than 6,000 adult learners through our established Burnaby Community & Continuing Education program. The Literacy Intervention teacher will function as a part of the Instructional Services Team that supports literacy instruction across elementary schools with a focus on Kindergarten to Grade 3. Reporting to the designated Director of Instruction, the Literacy Intervention Teacher will deliver targeted, personalized instruction and collaborate closely with the school-based team to implement comprehensive literacy support strategies. This position requires travel between schools.

Functions Of The Position

  • Through collaboration and co-facilitation, support classroom teachers and school teams to identify the needs of students, set learning targets, and enhance best practices to ensure the continued growth of identified students in the area of reading;
  • Support the collection of assessment data and build understanding about how to utilize this data to plan for reading instruction;
  • Provide daily direct instruction and literacy intervention for identified students in 1-to-1 and small group settings using evidence-based practices, instructional data, and professional knowledge;
  • Meet regularly with classroom teachers and learning support teachers to collaboratively plan classroom literacy instruction that correlates with the needs of identified students;
  • Attend ongoing professional development related to the role;
  • Promote a common vision for reading instruction within the District that aligns with the District Literacy Framework
  • Support Instructional Services with other duties and initiatives as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Education degree with a minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience at the elementary level;
  • A Master's degree would be an asset;
  • Background and training in literacy, reading instruction, and literacy intervention;
  • Experience teaching students in K-3 that reflects a commitment to innovative and inclusive instruction, and assessment practices;
  • Experience teaching students with disabilities or diverse abilities and familiarity with Individual Education Plan goals is an asset;
  • Demonstrated ability in evidence-based decision-making in the classroom to support student success in literacy;
  • Commitment to systemic change based on an understanding of evolving trends in education as it pertains to improving student success in relation to literacy instruction;
  • Demonstrated leadership, flexibility, perseverance, as well as organizational and problem-solving skills;
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional learning and growth in the area of literacy;
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills including the demonstrated ability to work effectively with teachers, parents, and administrators;
  • Ability to effectively work independently with general direction.
