Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, to prepare for and perform Board painting as required and to work with/assist other trades.

Key Responsibilities

  • Discuss Painting Requirements with Administrators in Schools
  • Meet with school administrators to discuss details of painting requirements;
  • Consult in colour choices;
  • Arrange appropriate dates and times for completion of painting, considering evening permits and other scheduling needs.
  • Plan and Order Materials Needed for Each Job
  • Estimate, order and pick up paint and other materials required;
  • Assess the existing finish on surface to be painted, to determine proper materials to be used;
  • Mix paint in shop as needed, ensuring correct tint formula and tint machine to provide a uniform colour from gallon to gallon.
  • Perform Work as Arranged with School Administrator in a Timely Manner
  • Transport and set-up scaffolding where needed;
  • Complete repairs by patching holes or cracks as needed, sanding and priming the patches before painting;
  • Stain, Varnish or Paint New Millwork and other Materials in the Shop to a Professional Finish
  • Check new millwork for any defects, such as glue or scratches. Sand out defects and vacuum entire unit completely.
  • Paint Exterior Lines at Schools, including for Playgrounds and Parking Lots
  • Consult with school administrators on safest way of moving vehicles in and out of "Kiss 'n Ride" lanes, with vehicle and pedestrian traffic;
  • Suggest possible crosswalk additions when required and in an accessible area, such as proper curb openings for wheelchairs and strollers.
  • Paint handicap parking spots in blue and to specified dimensions, with proper access to ramps and/or curb openings. Measure out needed additions and spray appropriate colours.
  • Paint lines for playground games (4 squares, hop scotch, basketball, etc.) ensuring measurements and keeping a safe distance from doorways and corners of buildings.
  • Perform Miscellaneous Duties
  • Track time and work orders on weekly timesheets.
  • Assist other trades as needed.
  • Disarm and arm alarm systems in buildings when custodial staff not present.
  • Inspect and maintain all shop equipment in safe working order (i.e. ladders, scaffolding, spray equipment, etc.)
  • Pick-up old paint at schools when requested. Dispose of old paint according to Health and Safety guidelines.
  • Draw out and paint school logos in schools; paint non-slip coatings on portable steps and interior staircases.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Equipment Used

Painting equipment - brushes, rollers, spray equipment, scrapers, torches, ladders, scaffolding, fans and air purifiers, etc.

Qualifications

  • Secondary school graduation diploma and completion of 3-year Painter and Decorator Apprenticeship Certificate Program through Community College and up to one year of directly related work experience.
  • Valid Ontario Driver's License.
  • Familiarity with W.H.M.I.S., Occupational Health and Safety regulations, Construction Safety codes, MSDS sheets, and general knowledge of other trades.
  • Keyboarding skills and familiarity with using computerized systems for recording information.
  • A sound knowledge of school board safety standards and fire and building codes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and other trades and suppliers.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands, as detailed in the physical Demands Analysis for the position.
  • Painting experience in a school board would be an asset.

Additional Information

  • This is a 40 hour per week, permanent position.
  • This is for an afternoon shift, however the shift may change at times due to operational needs.
