The Hearing Resource teacher will provide direct or consultative services to support deaf and hard of hearing students' development of speech, language, cognition, audition, advocacy and social and academic development. This includes directly teaching students with a hearing loss, assessing the need for, and troubleshooting equipment, and providing initial and ongoing support in the development and implementation of the Individual Education Plan. The Hearing Resource teacher will conduct assessments, provide written reports, provide school teams with interpretation of audiological reports, provide school teams with conduct assessments, provide written reports, provide school teams with interpretation of audiological and their educational impact, and support with student transitions into kindergarten, secondary and post-secondary. In addition, the Hearing Resource teacher will liaise with, advise, and provide in service to school teams and parents regarding instructional strategies, universal and essential support, language development, acoustics, amplifications and assistive listening devices. Further, the Hearing Resource teacher will provide habilitation services to students with cochlear implants.

Qualifications

  • valid BC Teaching Certificate
  • masters degree in Deaf Education or Diploma in Deaf Education
  • certified, or be eligible for certification, by the Canadian Association of Educators of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
  • demonstrated successful and current experience working with students who have hearing loss and cochlear implants
  • expertise in the principles, best practice strategies, resources and technologies in the education of students with learning loss
  • excellent skills in oral and written communication, computer technology, collaborative consultation and problem solving
