Overview

The Human Resources Advisor,as a HR generalist, has responsibility for a broad range of Human Resources activities at all divisions of Corner Brook Pulp & Paper Limited in support of newsprint manufacturing objectives. The Human Resources Advisor will interact with all levels of management, employees and unions to provide HR support and advice following established programs, policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Environmental

  • Sustain a strong commitment to safety, ensuring safety is kept at the forefront and no compromises are encountered. Adhere to, and promote company safety and environmental policies.
  • Participate in investigations and follow-up for non-compliances of rules & regulations.
  • Ensure effective operations of the Mill’s medical center and security team on both proactive and emergency response matters.

Employee Relations

  • Manage a positive work environment by effectively administering Company policies and procedures.
  • Provide HR support to supervision and managers through communication and advising in people related services and problem solving of HR issues.
  • Support performance management and improvement plans.
  • Advise and mediate in issues involving Respectful Workplace Complaints.
  • Ensure compliance with privacy policies and legislation.

Administration of Collective Agreements / Union Relations

  • Maintain positive relations and good communications with leaders of 7 union locals.
  • Interpretation and application of collective agreements
  • Administer labour relations including dispute resolution, grievance resolution and arbitration process.
  • Direct and participate in matters involving disciplinary action and performance improvement plans.
  • Participate in collective agreement bargaining.
  • Manage personnel files including seniority lists.

Recruitment & Succession Planning

  • Plan for workforce attrition.
  • Manage new hire process for recruitment of all union and salaried supervision & technical staff.
  • Arrange and conduct interviews, reference checks, assessments & testing.
  • Provide employment offers.
  • Conduct on boarding for new employees.

Benefit Program Administration

  • Understand benefits programs and be able to answer questions as required.
  • Ensure Kruger HRIS systems including JDE, FlexPlus and Blue Cross are maintained appropriately.

Labour Oversight & Budgeting

  • Develop, support, and monitor labour usage and training budgets in close teamwork with departmental Superintendents.
  • Establish and support measurable Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) including labour utilization versus budget, overtime, absenteeism, training, etc.
  • Develop and implement plans and operating methods/procedures designed to efficiently utilize manpower resources.

Employee Development

  • Oversee training activities and succession planning for employees.
  • Ensure training records database is maintained.
  • Develop and manage the training budget process for CBPPL.
  • Seek available training grants and make applications.

HR Manager Relief

Assume the duties of the Human Resources Manager, in his/her absence.

DIRECT REPORTS

The Human Resources Advisor will be responsible for the direct supervision of:

  • Human Resources Scheduler
  • Occupational Health Nurse

Coach, develop and manage all direct reports. Evaluate performance of direct reports by way of the Employee Development and Performance Appraisal Review (EDPAR).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Business Administration or other appropriate University degree.
  • Minimum of 7 years of work experience in Human Resources
  • Certified Human Resources Professional certification (CHRP)
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Capacity to exercise problem solving techniques in the analysis of a problem.
  • Aptitude to function as a Change Agent, to foster creativity and idea generation.
  • Proficient use of computers
