Due to our company growth and expanding footprint, we are looking to add an Automation & Controls Technician in Port Alberni, BC.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR:
The Automation & Controls Technician is responsible for supporting the design, development, and maintenance of new and existing controls platforms. Successful candidates will use their technical skills and experience to contribute to all stages of controls application development as well as provide service and support resources for our growing population of elite aerial firefighting products and programs. Reporting to the Controls and Automation Manager, this position is full-time and requires onsite presence in Port Alberni. Some travel may be required as well as after hours remote or on-call support availability as necessary.

The Automation & Controls Technician is responsible for supporting the design, development, and maintenance of new and existing controls platforms. Successful candidates will use their technical skills and experience to contribute to all stages of controls application development as well as provide service and support resources for our growing population of elite aerial firefighting products and programs. Reporting to the Controls and Automation Manager, this position is full-time and requires onsite presence in Port Alberni. Some travel may be required as well as after hours remote or on-call support availability as necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design, implement, and test application software for logic-controlled applications.
- Participate in overall system architecture design and definition for both hard and software.
- Supply equipment drawings, schematics, and layouts in accordance with company standards.
- Provide hands-on support investigating, troubleshooting, and maintaining system controls and components.
- Work with new and existing vendors to specify and select control components.
- Assist in the development and improvement of new and existing test and calibration procedures.
- Support the development of application support documentation.
- Degree or Diploma in either Controls, Automation, Mechanical Eng, Electro or Hydro Mechanical Eng.
- Excels with programming for logic controllers.
- Adept with interpreting and writing PLC logic including LD, FBD, SFC, ST, and IL languages.
- Comfortable with data analysis using Excel and MATLAB.
- Familiar with office software including MS Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint, and Word.
- Proficient with use of control system troubleshooting tools such as Multi-Meter and CAN-Sniffer.
- Experience with CANbus and/or Modbus communication protocols is an asset.
- Experience with bulk material handling and/or mobile applications is an asset.
- Excellent teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage time responsibly.
- Comfortable coordinating with multi-disciplinary teams across multiple locations and time zones.
- $28.25 - $30/hour, depending on experience.
- Company paid benefits and a 5% matching pension plan.
