As an Arborist II you will be working within Urban Forests to direct and schedule tree pruning, tree maintenance, and tree removal. You will take on a lead role in the training/mentoring of Labourers, Developmental Arborists and Arborists to ensure the proper skills and abilities are developed to meet the requirements and standards of the City.

What will you do?

  • Assist pruning crew leader, includes on-site supervision and site inspections
  • Provide direction to Arborists and crews on day to day operational tasks
  • Coordinate and schedule daily pruning, removals and tree maintenance
  • Dispatch work and provide direction on work required through 311 notifications
  • Inspect the condition of individual trees or groups of trees to ascertain overall health or to identify damage caused from disease, weather, age, fire or vandalism assign work as needed based on the assessment
  • Safely operate aerial trucks and other arboriculture equipment, vehicles and tools
  • Train and mentor front line staff in arboriculture safety and tasks
  • Deliver tool box talks as directed by the crew leader
  • Update and track tasks performed and safety records
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment such as chainsaws, brush blades and various arboriculture tools
  • Respond to public complaints and questions about arboriculture and the care and management of the Urban Forest
  • Investigate urban tree notifications and formulate recommendations and schedule the work
  • Maintain records, time sheets and daily work progress reports, vehicle downtime
  • Update tree inventory and tool and supply inventory
  • Conduct job duties in a safe manner in compliance with City and Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Legislation regulations, codes, policies and competency training
  • Perform other related duties and assist Crew Leader as required


Qualifications:

  • Completion of Grade 12 or GED
  • Current ISA (International Society of Arboriculture) certification
  • 4 years related experience with a specific focus on tree planting, pruning, maintenance and removal; plus arboriculture and silviculture work


Assets:

  • Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) is an asset
  • Experience supervising or directing staff is an asset


Skills required for success:

  • Demonstrated ability and completion of mandatory training in: Chainsaw Operations (Arbor Master Canada), Ground Worker Operations, Tree Hazard Assessment, Tree Felling (Arbor Master Canada), Tree Pest and Disease Management, Ropes/Knots/Rigging, Bolting and Cabling, Pruning, Barricading, Flagman, Fall Protection, and Electrical Awareness
  • Knowledge of silviculture practices as they relate to urban forest care
  • Experience & knowledge in large tree care, plant identification and tree pest identification and tree pruning standards
  • The ability and willingness to operate or be trained on aerial bucket trucks and other related forestry tasks
  • Knowledge of OH&S policies and Legislation
  • Exemplary customer service skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic computer skills including Google Suite (Gmail, Docs, Sheets… etc.)

Conditions of Employment:

  • Personal Protective Equipment
    • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
    • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is a requirement for this position
    • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 3 driver’s license with Air Brakes Endorsement (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Standard First Aid including Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate
  • Applicants may be tested

Up to 1 temporary full-time position for up to 18 months

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week. Monday-Friday.

Salary Range: $35.819 (Hourly); $74,790.07 (Annually)


Salary ranges are in the process of being updated in accordance with the recently ratified collective agreement between the City and CUPE and will be forthcoming shortly.
