Senior Engineering Manager (Payments & Billing - Backend)
Scribd, Inc.
Date: 6 days ago
City: Ottawa, Ontario
Contract type: Full time

At Scribd (pronounced “scribbed”), our mission is to spark human curiosity. Join our team as we create a world of stories and knowledge, democratize the exchange of ideas and information, and empower collective expertise through our three products: Everand, Scribd, and Slideshare.
We support a culture where our employees can be real and be bold; where we debate and commit as we embrace plot twists; and where every employee is empowered to take action as we prioritize the customer.
When it comes to workplace structure, we believe in balancing individual flexibility and community connections. It’s through our flexible work benefit, Scribd Flex, that employees – in partnership with their manager – can choose the daily work-style that best suits their individual needs. A key tenet of Scribd Flex is our prioritization of intentional in-person moments to build collaboration, culture, and connection. For this reason, occasional in-person attendance is required for all Scribd employees, regardless of their location.
So what are we looking for in new team members? Well, we hire for “GRIT”. The textbook definition of GRIT is demonstrating the intersection of passion and perseverance towards long term goals. At Scribd, we are inspired by the potential that this can unlock, and ask each of our employees to pursue a GRIT-ty approach to their work. In a tactical sense, GRIT is also a handy acronym that outlines the standards we hold ourselves and each other to. Here’s what that means for you: we’re looking for someone who showcases the ability to set and achieve Goals, achieve Results within their job responsibilities, contribute Innovative ideas and solutions, and positively influence the broader Team through collaboration and attitude.
About The Role
At Scribd, we believe access to knowledge should be frictionless—and that starts with a robust and scalable billing and payments experience. We’re building a world-class Payments & Billing team to power our global subscription business, which serves over 2 million paying subscribers across multiple regions. As Senior Engineering Manager, Payments & Billing, you’ll lead the strategy, architecture, and execution for systems that process millions of monthly transactions across diverse geographies, multiple local entities, local currencies, and multiple payment service providers.
This is more than just payments, it’s the full monetization platform that underpins our global subscription model of our products. You’ll own the end-to-end lifecycle of billing and payments infrastructure, ensuring it is extensible, compliant, and optimized for performance, cost-efficiency, and business agility. This is a pivotal leadership role with high ownership, shaping the backbone of a hundred-million-dollar global subscription business and enabling the next stage of Scribd’s growth.
In this role, you’ll be at the helm of the team responsible for everything from subscription orchestration and transaction processing to compliance, revenue tooling, and platform observability. If you’re an experienced engineering leader who thrives in both technical and domain complexity, you’ll find this role uniquely rewarding. You’ll collaborate closely with Product, Finance, Legal, and Risk to deliver a platform that is not only stable and secure, but also highly optimized for growth, experimentation, and international scale. Your work will directly impact revenue, customer retention, and Scribd’s ability to scale efficiently as we grow.
What You’ll Do
Must-Haves

You’ll have the mandate and executive support to build and lead a top-tier engineering team, define foundational architecture, and deliver measurable outcomes that directly impact revenue, customer experience, and Scribd’s global expansion.
If you’re looking for a role where you can build, lead, and scale with clarity and impact, we’d love to hear from you.

What You’ll Do
- Lead the engineering strategy and execution for Scribd’s payments and billing platform, spanning the entire subscription lifecycle, payment processing, transaction flows, revenue tooling, compliance, and more.
- Build and manage a high-performing team of ~5 backend engineers, providing mentorship, feedback, and career development support.
- Stay deeply technical: You will be a thought partner to your team and a hands-on leader who understands systems at every level.
- Partner closely with Product Management to translate vision into technical execution, collaborating on roadmaps, prioritizing engineering investments, and ensuring timely delivery.
- Use data as a first-class input: in partnership with the Analytics team, you’ll analyze performance trends, investigate anomalies, monitor KPIs, and champion instrumentation and telemetry that enable the team to operate with precision and foresight.
- Foster a culture of technical excellence, operational rigor, and continuous improvement, empowering your team to navigate ambiguity, reduce complexity, and ship impactful work with speed and confidence.
Must-Haves
- 7+ years of engineering experience, including 3 to 5+ years in engineering management, leading backend teams through high-impact systems development.
- Deep domain expertise in Payments: You’ve implemented payment systems—ideally in the B2C subscription space—and integrated them with payment service providers.
- Strong technical foundation: You bring architectural depth and practical experience designing and implementing complex software systems. While we value engineering fundamentals over specific tools, our stack includes Ruby, MySQL, and AWS, so familiarity with these technologies is a plus.
- Cross-functional agility: You’ve worked closely with PMs, Analytics, Finance, and vendors to ship solutions aligned with compliance and business requirements.
- Execution excellence: You thrive in fast-moving environments, balancing velocity with quality and long-term sustainability.
- People-first leadership: You’ve grown, coached, and retained strong engineering teams fostering technical excellence.
- Knowledge of recurring billing architectures, local payment methods, global transaction processing with local entities, fraud prevention, or chargeback workflows.
- Experience building systems for international subscription products, including handling regional pricing, tax, and payment nuances.
- Exposure to compliance frameworks, such as PCI-DSS, and best practices in secure payments infrastructure.
