Maintenance Planner

The Maintenance Planner will provide expertise and technical support to enhance maintenance processes, while exhibiting leadership in key areas such as planning day-to-day and long-term maintenance work. In this role, the successful candidate will have a major impact in optimizing the management of assets, and will focus on enhancing the effectiveness of the Maintenance team and plant operations as a whole.

Reporting to the Maintenance & Engineering Manager, the Maintenance Planner’s duties & responsibilities include the following:

  • Coordinate, organize and plan maintenance projects using a systematic and analytical approach that ensures efficient management of labour, materials, and timelines
  • Prioritize maintenance tasks and prepare work orders based on production schedules and equipment needs, ensuring adherence to the maintenance plan
  • Assist with the installation and maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems to resolve issues promptly
  • Oversee and maintain the maintenance work order backlog within the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to ensure accurate tracking and prioritization of tasks
  • Ensure proper maintenance of equipment, compliance with electrical and mechanical codes and adherence to safety regulations
  • Lead the coordination and facilitation of Routine Week, Down Day, and Outage activities, including organizing scheduling meetings to ensure successful execution
  • Monitor and report Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to support the Asset Reliability Process
  • Schedule staff and provide appropriate feedback on progress and quality of work performed, including training employees on new work procedures and safety policies when necessary
  • Periodically supervise unionized tradespeople when needed to cover vacations, occasional weekend work, and special projects
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of outside contractors as required
  • Monitor on-time completion of Preventive Maintenance (PM) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM) work orders focusing on Critical and Regulatory inspections
  • Assist with the development and implementation of maintenance policies, procedures, work instructions and preventative/corrective measures
  • Collaborate with other Supervisors, team members and departments to maintain efficiency and safety of the steel mill operation
  • Performs all other duties as assigned to support plant performance and reliability

The Maintenance Planner will possess the following qualifications and attributes:

  • Electrical or mechanical technologist or technician College diploma preferred
  • At least three to five years of maintenance experience in a heavy manufacturing environment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and expertise
  • Experience managing a team of skilled trades in a unionized environment would be considered an asset
  • Must be willing to work shifts when needed and provide weekend and overtime maintenance shift supervision as well as occasional vacation coverage
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of maintenance principles and practices with a technical background in troubleshooting and continuous improvement
  • Comfortable working at heights, operating basic tools/machinery, and working directly in the field
  • Strong organizational, leadership and planning skills. Demonstrates the ability to meet and manage competing deadlines and handle multiple priorities/demands
  • Proven ability to analyze problems, delegate tasks and collaborate within a team environment
  • Exhibits excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency using MS Office and CMMS software would be considered an asset
  • A strong willingness to work in a fast-paced, lean environment where adaptability, innovation and hard work are valued above all else
