Date: 3 days ago
City: Vancouver, British Columbia
Contract type: Full time

Department: Product

Location: Vancouver

Compensation: $90,895 - $116,673 / year

Description

We’re hiring an Intermediate Product Designer to join our team working on emerging products—brand-new initiatives that build on Spare’s proven foundation and push into exciting, high-impact new spaces.

Spare has already reshaped how public transit and municipal services are delivered, bringing user-centered, accessible design to traditionally underserved areas. Now, we’re branching out—building new tools, platforms, and services that extend our impact and create fresh opportunities for innovation.

This role is ideal for a designer who thrives in ambiguity, loves shaping early product direction, and wants to be part of defining what Spare builds next. You’ll work hands-on with users and cross-functional partners, advocate for design at every stage of development, and help set the tone for how we approach new product creation from day one.

This role follows a hybrid schedule. We require team members to be in the office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, with the option to work remotely on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Our office is located in downtown Vancouver, and we believe this balance fosters strong collaboration while supporting flexibility.

About the Role

You will…

Design forward-looking user experiences:
  • Help define and design innovative new product experiences for customers exploring our emerging product offerings.
  • Use insights from research, data, and experimentation to shape thoughtful, user-centered solutions.
  • Spend time with users in person and remotely to understand their challenges, goals, and environments—and help define the right problem and framework for the solution.
  • Confidently articulate and defend your design rationale to teammates, clients, and stakeholders—even when the path is ambiguous or challenging.
  • Balance product vision and user needs with practical constraints to ship high-quality solutions quickly and iteratively.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams:
  • Partner closely with product managers, engineers, and other designers to co-create solutions, prioritize features, and bring new ideas to life.
  • Collaborate directly with clients and external stakeholders to understand their needs and gather feedback early and often.
  • Contribute to and evolve our design systems, guidelines, and team processes as we grow.
  • Bring a clear and reasoned point of view to discussions, while staying open and adaptable to others' perspectives.

About You

You have…
  • 2 to 4+ years experience in product design, ideally working on web or SaaS applications with complex user needs.
  • Strong end-to-end design skills—from discovery to wireframes to polished UI—and a portfolio that demonstrates your process and outcomes.
  • Experience engaging with users directly, both in person and remotely, to uncover needs and inform product direction.
  • A knack for communicating clearly and persuasively, both in writing and in conversation.
  • Experience presenting and advocating for your work to product teams, stakeholders, or clients.
  • A good understanding of modern web UI patterns, responsive design principles, and accessibility best practices.
  • Comfort with fast-paced, ambiguous problem spaces and a desire to help shape early product strategy through design.
  • Empathy and curiosity: you seek to deeply understand users’ needs and motivations.
  • Familiarity with basic HTML/CSS or front-end development constraints (no coding required, but helpful for collaboration).
Nice to Have:
  • Experience designing a net-new product or service from 0 to 1.
  • Experience in B2B SaaS, govtech, or highly configurable software tools.
  • Exposure to early-stage product development, innovation labs, or startups.
  • Comfort running lightweight user research or usability testing.
  • Experience working with component libraries or products built with React.

Why Join Us?

Spare has already made a meaningful impact in the transit and govtech world—helping cities deliver smarter, more flexible, and more accessible services through our innovative platforms.

Now we’re expanding into exciting new product areas, and we’re looking for designers who want to be part of that next chapter. This is your chance to work on high-potential, early-stage products—helping define not just what we build, but how we build it and why.
