About The Role

TransAlta is seeking to hire an intermediate or experienced Accountant to join our TransAlta team, reporting directly to the Supervisor of Energy Marketing Finance within Accounting and Settlements.

As the Accountant, you will be accountable for supporting the Supervisor, Energy Marketing Finance, with ensuring that accounting for Energy Marketing transactions is in accordance with company policies, controls, and accounting standards, and that the Energy Marketing financial statements are accurate and complete. This position both prepares monthly accruals, journal entries, business reports, and assists in the review of Financial Reporting Assistance Package (“FRAPs”) and account reconciliations. You will lead and support initiatives to improve processes for Energy Marketing accounting and across the Finance Shared Services team.

This role is based out of our new office at TransAlta Place (Keynote Office Tower) in Downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule (days in the office and days at home).

What You Will Do

  • Support the Supervisor, Energy Marketing Finance, to review, assess and oversee all transactional activities within the Energy Marketing Accounting team and provide guidance, clear direction and leadership
  • Support the Accounting & Settlements team with questions regarding accounting standards, policies and controls
  • Ensure compliance with IFRS, US GAAP, SOX, and TransAlta’s financial policies
  • Support the preparation and review of monthly and quarterly SOX controls and FRAP requirements
  • Ensure accurate and timely monthly accruals
  • Conduct monthly and quarterly variance analysis and provide insights on financial results
  • Prepare monthly journal entries to record, transfer, or use Renewable energy credits that are internally generated or externally purchased
  • Contribute to quarterly reporting processes to support the corporate team in preparing and presenting financial results
  • Assist with the annual audit process by responding to internal and external audit inquiries
  • Support audit requests with the company's external auditors for the Energy Marketing segment
  • Identify, recommend, and implement both process improvements and best use of reporting tools to improve the efficiency of processes and the resulting output of the group
  • Participate in and provide recommendations for technical accounting issues, including the Deal Management Team review meetings
  • Other accountabilities as assigned.

What We Need From You

  • University degree in accounting or finance
  • CPA and/or CFA designation or working towards the designation
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships
  • Proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office Suite
  • High attention to detail in all aspects of the role
  • Ability to drive and lead process improvements within the area of responsibility
  • Acts as a key resource, collaborating with other teams to resolve issues
  • Effective time management skills, ensuring work is completed accurately and on schedule
  • Commitment to best practices and continuous process improvement
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues independently
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team player, providing backup support and taking on additional responsibilities to contribute to the success of the Shared Accounting Services department
  • Working knowledge of SAP and Allegro-Horizon is considered an asset
  • Knowledge of TransAlta’s accounting policies
  • Knowledge of IFRS as it relates to the Energy Marketing business activity (IFRS 9, IFRS 13, IFS 15, IFRS 2, IFRS 7 and IAS 32)
  • Proficient knowledge of financial systems and processes with demonstrated experience in process improvement
  • Exceptional computer skills, especially in Excel, enabling quick and efficient completion of tasks; able to transfer this knowledge and skill to others on the team
  • Highly organized, capable of simultaneously managing numerous tasks for both self and staff
