Day in the Life

We are looking for an experienced Estimator Manager to join our team, reporting to the Assistant Vice President. The Estimator Manager will be responsible for preparing cost estimates for conventionally bid projects, design-build projects, and other alternative delivery project (ADP) models. This role is integral to The Miller Group’s vision of building greatness by promoting an entrepreneurial spirit, seeking constant improvement, and embracing innovation and accountability.


Key Responsibilities:


Estimating:

  • Develop strategic and competitive plans for each tender.
  • Guide the preparation of thorough, accurate, and timely estimates, including bid documents and written correspondence.
  • Participate in and understand design/build, ADP, and build-to-spec contracts.
  • Accurately interpret project drawings, specifications, and supplier/subcontractor quotes.
  • Responsible for precise take-offs of quantities from project documentation.
  • Prepare detailed estimates from first principles using cost history and existing estimating software in line with company policies and best practices.
  • Solicit quotations and proposals from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Conduct peer reviews of estimates prepared by other estimators.


Project Coordination / Management:

  • Prepare preliminary and draft project schedules.
  • Assist the project management group with forecasting and costing for potential claims or scope changes.
  • Control bid documents and follow up on proposals to customers.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Attend site visits, pre-bid, and pre-award meetings as required.
  • Assist in project startup by leading post-award and pre-construction meetings.
  • Negotiate major purchase and subcontract agreements, preparing and reviewing purchase orders and subcontract documents.


Management:

  • Guide, direct, and train junior estimating and clerical staff.
  • Foster positive relationships with clients, consultants, and stakeholders.
  • Communicate project goals, objectives, and corrective actions effectively.
  • Attend site visits, pre-bid, and pre-award meetings as required.
  • Ensure compliance with estimating processes and procedures.


Compliance & Improvement:

  • Uphold confidentiality and protect proprietary information.
  • Assist in the maintenance and upgrade of the estimating database and software.
  • Contribute to project success and learning through effective communication.


Health, Safety & Environment:

  • Ensure a safe work environment by enforcing Miller safety standards and policies.

Qualifications:

  • 5-7 years of experience as a roads and/or civil estimator in heavy civil transportation and bridge projects.
  • Completion of post-secondary education with a degree or diploma in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or related fields.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction documents including plans, specifications, and technical materials.
  • Strong time management skills to meet multiple deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
  • Experience with Heavy Bid estimating software or equivalent systems is a plus.
  • Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint); knowledge of Bluebeam and scheduling software is preferred.
