Your Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, coach, and support the accounting team in the delivery of timely, accurate reporting and analysis.
- Coordinate and assist in the preparation of monthly, interim, and annual financial statements and statutory reports.
- Liaise with external auditors throughout the year and during year-end reviews.
- Ensure financial reporting complies with Public Sector Accounting Standards (PSAS) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
- Maintain and monitor internal controls to ensure financial accuracy and integrity.
- Conduct and support financial forecasting and business unit financial analysis.
- Provide financial benchmark analysis and interpret accounting data for management decision-making.
- Lead or support corporate initiatives related to changes in accounting policies and reporting standards.
- Support corporate budgeting processes including business planning, cost allocation, and financial reporting.
- Coordinate and assist with the City's grant life-cycle process, including planning and financial submissions.
- Support the development and enhancement of enterprise systems, including Unit4 modules such as General Ledger, Planner, and Project Cost Billing.
- Ensure financial system integrity and manage upgrades or enhancements as needed.
- Collaborate with departments across the City to provide financial support, reporting, and advice.
- Lead and contribute to corporate projects that impact accounting, budgeting, and financial systems.
- Provide ongoing performance management, mentorship, and leadership to team members.
- Promote a collaborative, customer-focused environment that encourages innovation and results.
- Ensure accounting staff are equipped with the tools, training, and support to succeed in their roles.
- Thorough understanding of accounting principles, PSAS, and IFRS.
- Proven ability to supervise, mentor, and develop a high-performing team.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Effective communication and relationship-building skills with internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience implementing or optimizing ERP systems (Unit4 preferred).
- Organizational awareness with the ability to balance strategic thinking and day-to-day operational leadership.
- Confidence in presenting complex financial information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Bachelor's degree in Finance or Accounting from a recognized post-secondary institution.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required.
- Minimum of six (6) years of progressive experience in an accounting environment.
- Minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience.
- Experience in a public sector or municipal environment considered an asset.
