Job Description

RESPONSIBILITIES AND Accountabilities:

To provide assistance with the daily operation of the Thrift Store:

  • Processes raw materials by unloading, sorting, packing, storing, loading, and bailing the donations; protecting the integrity of the donations.
  • Assisting staff/customers in carrying furniture or other heavy items
  • Selects donations for store distribution, meeting established standards of quality and distinguishing between discarded and good quality merchandise according to company standards.
  • Meets assigned daily targets; counts, weighs and records incoming and outgoing donations.
  • Complies with all safety procedures and in/outdoor tidy maintenance guidelines.
  • Performs janitorial duties as requested.
  • May operate warehouse equipment, if trained/certified as required, such as baler, compactor, forklift.

NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

Managerial Responsibility

  • Reports directly to the Thrift Store Manager
  • Direct reports for this position: None
  • This position is responsible for their own time and effort only. They may demonstrate work methods to new employees, volunteers, or students.

Financial And Materials Management

  • Does not process any financial transactions as no budget responsibilities.
  • Responsible for the safekeeping of thrift store supplies and equipment for business use.

Working Conditions

  • Serves in a warehouse or store, within a busy CFS ministry. The location of work may create a possibility of experiencing the following disagreeable conditions:
    • angry/abusive people and verbal abuse,
    • minor risk of harm, injury, illness due to physical attacks from others and/or exposure to infectious diseases.
    • Emergency Response situations (fire, bomb threat, etc.)
    • Dirty environment/odours (garbage, washrooms)
    • Truck fumes
    • Excessive noise
    • Extreme temperature changes
    • Work schedule may impact life (weeknights and weekends)
    • Monotonous work (repetitive tasks)
    • Increased potential for on-site accidents (moving or sharp objects)
    • Exposure to toxic chemicals
    • Exposure to bodily fluids
    • Other potentially dangerous situations (unsafe donations)
    • Warehouse Hours generally Monday – Saturday but require some flexibility for special events or urgent situations.
    • Not required to travel.

    HEALTH & SAFETY

    • Required to complete general orientation, including safety in the workplace training and annual review.
    • Contributes to the safety of staff and customers (e.g. snow removal, clear fire exits, no obstacles inside/outside store/warehouse, cleans spillage).
    • Universal precautions: wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) as required, including gloves/glasses.
    • Workers on the truck and/or are required to move furniture must wear steel-toed footwear.

    Education And Experience Qualifications

    • The successful candidate must have completed some High School.
    • Prior related experience, including in a warehouse or thrift store setting, is an asset.

    Special Licenses, Diplomas, Certifications Or Requirements

    • Must hold or obtain a recent Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Check, satisfactory to TSA.
    • Must receive clearance from TSA Abuse Registry Check.
    • Required to complete WHMIS training annually.
    • Required to complete Praesidum Academy training modules relevant to position.
    • Current certification in First Aid / CPR, or willingness to obtain, is an asset.
    • Current certification for Forklift operation, or willingness to obtain, is an asset.

    Skills And Capabilities

    • The performance of the job requires physical dexterity; frequently sitting for long periods of time, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, reaching overhead, pushing and pulling, lifting and kneeling and lifting up to 25lbs. May on occasion be required to lift, move, or transport weights up to 50lbs.
    • Attention to detail and the ability to follow directions and well-defined steps.

    Compensation

    The target hiring range for this position is $17.85 to $19.69 with a maximum of $23.63.

    Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
