Job Summary

Reporting to the General Manager, this position’s prime objective is to coordinate, implement and maintain the site’s health and safety and environmental policies and procedures in accordance with governmental and Company guidelines. The incumbent will work with all departments to ensure the safe, and environmentally-friendly production and shipment of product(s) through the use of Company assets. The incumbent is responsible for conducting all employee and contractor training, H&S related drills, evacuation, audits and preparing environmental reports for submission to government agencies. The incumbent provides guidance and support to Managers and employees to successfully drive continuous improvement in the site’s Health and Safety Management system and safety culture.

Duties And Responsibilities

The Environmental Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting with the development and implementation of site specific health, safety, industrial hygiene, environmental and security policies and procedures in compliance with regulatory and corporate requirements.
  • Providing guidance and support to Managers and employees regarding H&S or environmental issues
  • Identifying and evaluating H&S or environmental risks and ensuring proper risk reduction and control measures are implemented
  • Coaching and mentoring management and employees on safe work practices and behaviours
  • Ensuring effective H&S and environmental training is developed and completed according to the training plan
  • Performing inspections, audits, drills and self-assessments to ensure and validate compliance with all regulatory and company requirements
  • Measuring, monitoring and reporting site specific H&S and environmental related key performance indicators to management and corporate, as required
  • Ensuring timely and effective completion of corrective and preventative action plans
  • Coordinating the timely investigation of all H&S and environmental related incidents and ensuring proper escalation, root cause analysis, and completion of suitable corrective actions.
  • Completing Industrial Hygiene assessments and monitoring in accordance with the annual monitoring plan
  • Validating a fire safety program is in place and ensure proper functionality of sprinkler systems and alarms
  • Under the guidance of management, acting as the primary contact for external H&S and environmental related regulators.
  • Tracking and trending injuries, near miss events, safety observations and property damage incidents
  • Staying current on government regulations and emerging issues and trends
  • Completing and submitting all required regulatory reports
  • Ensuring all environmental inspections and reviews are completed as scheduled and are properly documented.
  • Manages disposal of regulated and non-regulated waste to ensure compliance
  • Works with facility personnel to identify and implement sustainability projects to meet company objectives


Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Associate’s Degree or Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Safety Management, or related field or 1-3 years of related H&S experience in an industrial manufacturing setting.
  • Ability in influence others and present recommendations
  • Demonstrated ability to be part of and work effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to demonstrate a through and comprehensive understanding of relevant standards
  • Creative thinking skills with the ability to balance multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Possesses basic knowledge of technical information regarding relevant H&S elements
  • Experience in developing and/or implementing the Voluntary Protection Program, OHSAS 18001, or related ISO Management Systems preferred.
  • Flexible in working during non-business hours to meet business needs.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Responds to urgent or emergency situations outside or normal working hours, as needed.
  • Works in general office and manufacturing plant environment
  • Works around powered equipment and locations requiring access via stairs and/or ladders
