Our Communication Department is looking for a dedicated Graphic Designer to join the team.

Position Responsibilities

We're looking for a creative and personable individual with extensive industry knowledge and experience to manage highly-visible graphic design projects from start to finish.

As a member of the Communications Department, you will be responsible for delivering the City's visual identity through the development and implementation of resources, standards, and quality assurance processes that apply to all departments and facilities. Your ability to lead by example, manage conflict and clearly communicate in visual, verbal, and written form is critical.

The successful candidate will demonstrate previous experience, artistic abilities and project management skills through a digital portfolio included in application.

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Wield complex industry standard software with superior proficiency to produce digital assets.
  • Analyze the client's needs in order to generate ideas and design concepts.
  • Apply knowledge of colour theory, typography, and trends to produce effective products.
  • Prepare sketches, layouts, and other graphical elements to illustrate complex ideas.
  • Employ artistic ability to draw digital illustrations/artwork for use in projects.
  • Tactfully transform constructive criticism into effective product improvements.
  • Edit and process raw digital photos for display and archival in the media gallery.
  • Independently manage corporate design projects from start to finish.
  • Evaluate design project requests and assign appropriate priorities to each.
  • Coordinate and schedule project work in alignment with priorities.
  • Facilitate requirements gathering activities and develop creative briefs.
  • Coordinate the printing and production of physical materials.
  • Inspect the final product and resolve production issues.
  • Complete tasks as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with team members to achieve project goals.
  • Participate on project teams to provide expert advice and perspective.
  • Liaison for City staff and external design agencies.

Qualifications

  • An undergraduate degree or diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Minimum of two (2) years in a related field of study, such as graphic design or visual communications.
  • Minimum of two (2) years recent work experience as a graphic designer.
  • At least one (1) year of experience working in a design agency.
  • Broad range of experience producing assets for print, online and industrial (signage).
  • Proficiency with Adobe's Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Formal project management training and experience leading projects independently.
  • A talent for digital illustration.
  • Photography experience an asset.

Hours

The standard workweek consists of an average of 35 hours, with the specific schedule being determined by the immediate supervisor.

Compensation

Starting Salary $36.11 per hour as per the Out-of-Scope Agreement.
