Through their collaborative work with Sault Area Hospital’s interdisciplinary Analytics Team, the student will have the opportunity to gather insight and experience from several potential mentors. A primary Mentor has been chosen, although other mentorship will be considered based on the student’s background and future career goals. For example, if the student wishes to enter a position in the field of Health Informatics, they will be paired with an Analyst who has education and experience in Healthcare Information Management Systems. Together, the student and Mentor will develop a learning plan that will focus on providing the student with the opportunity to become familiar with healthcare data, analytics, and records management systems. A set of job tasks will be outlined at the outset of the placement with clear goals regarding deadlines and development. The student will have the opportunity to apply their education and experience in the healthcare sector. They will be involved in developing documentation and dashboard/report building from concept creation to application in a real-world setting. This placement will equip the student with interpersonal skills, knowledge of best practices in data mining and quality assurance, script writing, report building, and the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical audiences.

Qualifications

Desired Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in an undergraduate program in Computer Science, Business Administration, Health Informatics or related area.
  • One year of experience in a data analytic environment with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • One or more years of relational database experience (SQL Server, MySQL, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of data warehousing principles and experience in design and/or development using dimensional modeling principles.
  • Experience working with data visualization tools such as MicroStrategy, Power BI or Tableau.
  • Proficient use of the MS Office suite (specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • A willingness to undertake complex challenges as well as routine tasks.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as being a contributing team member.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to build strong working relationships.
  • Adherence to confidentiality and privacy requirements for sensitive financial and clinical information.

Asset Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Meditech Expanse electronic health record system.
  • Knowledge of hospital data sources (e.g., Canadian Institute of Health Information Discharge Abstract Database, National Ambulatory Care Reporting system, Ontario Mental Health Reporting System), information systems, performance indicators, data management and/or benchmarking activities in a hospital setting

Tasks & Responsibilities

Working directly with the Analytics Team, the student will:

  • Support the Analytics team in the development of key performance indicators, dashboards, data visualizations and reports for the purposes of monitoring and optimizing organizational performance on quality, safety, operations, and planning.
  • Connect, query, obtain, and consolidate data from multiple sources and systems in order to provide robust statistics.
  • Develop documentation for Sault Area Hospital Data Repository.
  • Provide analytical support and expertise to facilitate effective data analysis and interpretation.
  • Use keen attention to detail to ensure accuracy, reliability, and validity of dashboards and reports, following through on corrections when required.
  • Understand and maintain best practice standards for analysis and reporting at all levels including data governance, documentation, testing and visualization techniques.
  • Effectively use time management and problem solving skills to prioritize and complete work according to established deadlines.
  • Develop strong and trusting relationships with the Analytics Team and others throughout the organization through collaboration and teamwork.
  • Foster a work environment that values people and encourages participation, creativity, learning, and accountability.
