Position Overview

The Laboratory Analyst 1 performs sample preparation, analysis, and quality assurance for HRMS (High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry) work in a fast-paced laboratory environment. This role requires precision, attention to detail, and adherence to strict regulatory and quality standards.

Primary Responsibilities

Sample & Analysis Management

  • Review LIMS summary reports to plan and organize daily work priorities
  • Perform sample preparation and pre-analysis procedures according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Conduct basic testing procedures and HRMS-related analyses
  • Identify non-routine samples and escalate to supervisor for guidance
  • Meet quality and turnaround time (TAT) specifications; ensure samples are analyzed within holding time requirements
  • Employ proper laboratory techniques to minimize risk of mislabeling, sample mix-up, and cross-contamination

Materials & Equipment Management

  • Prepare standards and reagents; monitor quantities to ensure adequate supplies
  • Operate and maintain laboratory instruments and equipment (PC/Mac computers, pipettes, thermal cyclers, automated sequencers, liquid handling instruments, etc.)
  • Assess and correct operational problems according to SOP guidelines and ISO 17025 regulations

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Maintain a high level of accuracy in all sample preparation and analysis work
  • Identify and document sample deviations, non-conformances, and process deviations; report to supervisor
  • Provide input to corrective action procedures and report findings to supervisor
  • Support and comply with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System, and Health & Safety programs
  • Participate in lab and Health & Safety meetings when requested
  • Participate in internal and external audits when requested

Continuous Improvement & Development

  • Evaluate and initiate problem-solving in all laboratory areas
  • Participate in developing SOPs and general work instructions
  • Participate in validation of new procedures and instruments as required
  • Monitor laboratory operations to identify efficiency improvements and cost reduction opportunities
  • Provide training and guidance to junior staff; maintain training records and relevant qualifications

Communication & Housekeeping

  • Provide supervisor/manager with timely workstation status updates and advance notification of delays
  • Keep work area clean, neat, and organized
  • Perform other assigned responsibilities as needed

Required Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Post-secondary school education or equivalent laboratory experience
  • Demonstrated success in a Laboratory Technician role
  • Sound knowledge of sample handling procedures and laboratory compliance protocols

Technical Skills

  • Strong computer skills (PC/Mac)
  • Excellent manual dexterity and record-keeping abilities
  • Strong calculation and problem-solving abilities
  • Knowledge of and experience with laboratory Occupational Health & Safety practices
  • Experience handling hazardous materials using established safety procedures

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Flexible working hours, including overtime and shift work
